Hi Guys,

Ive seen a couple of posts on facebook around upgrading an old dash/ speedo to install an multi function display where there previously wasn't? Im not sure I trust some of the links and the info seems sparse?

Has anyone done this or got any links to companies that carry out the work?

Ive attached a picture that I have taken from facebook showing what the upgrade looks like. It looks like a neat mod just wanted some more info? My van is a 2005 and I really miss not having an MFD as all modern cars have??

It's been discussed here a lot before, so a good starting point - if you haven't already - is to put "multi function display upgrade" into the forum search. That will find at least a dozen threads where it's been covered, though not all are pre-facelift.

And yes, there are companies that specialise in that sort of upgrade - though they tend to be hugely expensive compared to doing it yourself.

The forum search tool has a very bad reputation, with good reason historically. But it was improved at the last major forum update and it is actually very good now.

I should have said (about DIY) that it is not - as you will see from previous threads - in any way trivial because there is no option to add an MFD into your existing cluster. So it means an instrument cluster change, with implications for the immobiliser, and of course, a change to the mileage reading.

It all sounds doable. The vans off the road in winter and garaged and I’ve got vcds so it’ll save me getting bored in the next lock down!

From memory, you'll need access to VAG-tacho, or something equivalent. You can't do a cluster change with VCDS alone (unless it's a factory new one, when I think it may be possible).

Right slight update. Have spoken to a guy who mods the original cluster and installs the new mfd in your existing cluster. Not sure of the functionality but it looks pretty nifty. It’s programmable via a usb and displays driving info via the display??

Costs start £320 upwards. His name is vinny ware and he is going send me some more details.

I spoke to the same guy about upgrading my one a while back. The price is very good. He orders the boards in from Russia as they are made there. You need to have the mfd stalk on your van, he sent me instructions on retrofitting it as my van doesn't have it. Aside from that it's a case of sending the clocks off to have the upgrade done. Im considering it, I've just got to do the mfd stalk and cruise control first.

I had my caravelle clocks done by AR Ditta a few months back but come up with a snag. I had a later set of clocks done which is for a later van to mine and it flags all sorts of canbus data faults. What then happens is the system doesn't go to sleep and is kept powered bebause of the missing unit's. I have now sent an older caravelle clock cluster with the newer one to see if things can be done to get over a problem. I decided to go this route as the older stuff is getting harder to find as stuff gets scrapped.

I like the idea of a whole cluster upgrade rather than just the mfd though for our van .
I know theres a way of doing this but it means 'fixing' the immobiliser which kinda puts me off going this route.

I'd read that the cluster upgrade wasn't available for the T5.1 yet? Looks great though and I'd definitely be interested in upgrading if it's available.

The IMMO is not a problem if you have the pin number for the new clocks and have the pin for the old. This can't be read using VCDS and have to use vag-tacho or another piece of software that I can't remember to read the pin and change the mileage. It's also good because I can read fault codes and reset on the fly.

Well it’s all installed and to say I’m happy is an understatement. I haven’t uncovered the full extent of what can be done yet or how accurate it is but it can view fault logs so and reset by the looks of it. I just love the colour and speed on the display along with gear number and fuel data.

It might sound strange but it was the one thing missing on my van that would have made me upgrade.
