Guys really some sound advice, I have a 2.5 petrol auto T4 Navigator which about 4 months ago decided to slip out of 4th, it has been at the local autobox experts for over three months, spent about £1300 so far and still not sorted, the box has been out and checked, new shift solenoid, new selector switch, new speed sensor, computer tested and repaired???, and a auto doctor has given it the once over, auto guy still thinks it’s a ECU issue!

Would really appreciate any advice please!

Cheers Rod

The early TCU (ECU is Engine) had a problem where they tried to select 2 gears at once.
Most "good" specialists (eg MacKies in Glasgow) won't warranty a rebuild unless a new TCU is fitted.

I think your problem will be finding one.:(

There are some on the net...depends on your particular code number as they have to match. I had trouble with mine a while back, water damaged, as water runs down screen pillar into the TCU placement. I looked online and found the only ones with same code as mine were in the US and close on $1000.....cheaper ones elsewhere but not my code...you may be lucky T:

But, if they say you should fit a "new" TCU, due to the software/firmware issues, it would have a different code anyway.
Finding which is the "updated" version is the challenge I think.

Taken a gamble, bought a second hand ecu with one letter difference, L instead of J as the last digit on the code number, going to fit Sunday, £80 gamble, fingers crossed!!!

Gutted, gamble hasn’t paid off, actually worse than before, after loosing power, manual gears no longer work, any thoughts please!!

If this is worse than before would you then presume even more so that it’s a computer issue???

Is it an ECU [engine management] that you sent for, or the TCU [gearbox] which controls the gear change pattern and is in the driver's footwell ?

Yes mate, I get the ‘ what ‘ seems to be the proper term being ‘tcu’ but most seen to call it ecu...? But yes it’s the one on the right side inner wheelwell, wondered if it might need re configuring any thoughts appreciated,

If as you say you got one with "not quite the exact number match" then you may have to get it reprogrammed as they really do have to match up...I'm no expert and only going by what I have read about these boxes, having one myself that has just started playing up.

Big relief, took the original TCU to South West In Car Tech just outside Bristol, a guy I had kind of forgotten about since we were ‘putting’ air on my T5 about 10 years ago, so under a microscope he discovers poor solder repairs and fractures, so redone and back to me, refitted last night, a 10 mile ish run and it didn’t slip out of gear once, bonus no £££ charge was nice!!!
