Hi Johnyo

I know this is an old feed however can you or anyone else advise if replacing both top mount struts worked? I have a 2005 T30 130bph transporter which has a loud knocking sound coming from the steering. It has had this since i bought it 3 years ago.

Thanks
hi. the noise/knock has disappeared. i'm putting some miles in to see if it returns.T:

Hi new to forum and new t5' 63 plate owner.
Browsing through forum and came across this problem about knocking steering colum ' when someone posted not so much as a knock
But more of a notchy tight spot when turning the steering wheel, I'm a fitter for a crane hire company' on some of our new cranes
( German liehberr) the steering colum uses the same knuckle joints as many other vehicles have . We started getting this problem and it had me stumped for a few hours after checking steering Rams and plpes and pumps and pressure tests . So out of desperation I got the driver to keep turning the steering while I emptied a tin of wd40 on the two knuckle joints 20 mins later he was turning the steering with one finger smooth as silk . Hope this might help someone . Just to add there same joints as I have on my t5 .
Cas.

I have the vw t5.1- 4 motion swb 180ps kombi I've had it for a while now my boss got it factory made from vw. It's got 58k on the clock. I feel times there's a small resistance I can feel when going round corners but it only happens at certain times. There is no noise and it's the standard steel wheels and there's plenty of power steering fluid and I'm very careful when I'm on the road.

Has any one else noticed this kind of play on the steering wheel?
I've been in the van since new and my boss was a sensible driver but he didn't notice the resistance that I can feel in the steering wheel.

I would be happy if I can get some of your professional feedback. Thank you

Mine too, intermittent. Thought it was due to garage knackering bearing rings when lowering but they've been replaced and despite going away for a little while, the bad sounds are back :-( As an aside, got a creak on drivers door I can't suss out either, probably never will unless I ever find someone else who's had it happen and found solution !

I have a 2011 T5 SWB, it currently has 121452km and it has the knocking on the steering wheel, especially at low speeds and over speed bumps.
according to one of the mechanics I spoke to (Not a VW dealership) this is a sickness these Kombis have and it is nothing serious, it does not affect anything... not sure how true that is:*

How bad is the creak on the door? My last T5 did that and it was the hinge pin, the pin was trying to rotate in the wrong part of the hinge due to complete lack of lubrication. I dosed it with copious amounts of easing oil and then rotated the pin with a pair of plumbers grips, got it freed off eventually with a bit of patience.

Adding my recent experience in case it's of any value.
I thought I had the steering knock issue after reading about it on this forum - 130,000km in T5.2 2010 manual 103kw lwb
A definite knocking noise at low speeds when turning the wheel to the left or right, especially audible when cold.
Have recently changed from a general mechanic to a vw specialist.
His diagnosis is that the passenger side drive shaft is stuffed - not booked in to repair till next week.

I didn't think it could possibly be the drive shaft - because I had both drive shafts replaced at 110,000km - 18 months back.
The drivers side broke - my then general mechanic advised modified splines were available and did I want to replace both while the disc brakes were being done too - I said yes - turns out the passengers side were not modified anyway so that was unnecessary - and now the side I replaced when I didn't have to - needs to be replaced again.
Certainly tests my love for my van :(

And just to confirm - had my front passenger side drive shaft and stub axle replaced (for 2nd time in 18 months) - and the knocking noise I had is gone.

2005 2.5TDi AXE. Clunk from universal joint in the lower steering column? Reported to local VW van centre at 51000 miles.
According to the VW van centre it's a very common fault, so much so that they thought VW might contribute something towards repairing it, whilst not actually admitting it's a fault worthy of a recall, but when asked VW refused to pay anything.
Just putting up with it, stopped noticing, to be honest. It has been mentioned at MOT time but not so much as an advisory, yet.

I don't think I've ever heard the steering knock described as a squeak. On mine it manifested itself as a clonk which you could feel through the steering wheel as much as hear. The list above is out of date - mine was fixed under warranty and has never returned.
