Hi I have a 2010 2.0l Transporter 5 GP. Engine code CAAC. Flashing coil light on, scanned using VCDS and comes up with codes 4911 & 5257 - Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor; B1 S3 - P242A 00 [036] - Malfunction. I cleared faults and ran for a while then came back. First scan shows sensor 3 (pre DPF) as 1000∞C, (which I think is open circuit). I cleared the codes, started the engine and did a live measure of values, Exhaust gas temperature sensor 3 was showing a value of 113.4 ∞C.

Does it look like sensor 3 is faulty / on its way out? Posted below are the scan and some live data for DPF / EGT sensors etc.

Thanks in advance for any advice / help. Also appreciate any info on how to interpret the state of the DPF soot / ash levels.

Ignoring the known EGR problems that plague that model, before you start delving too deeply check the wiring loom around the DPF under the van. Following my EGR change a few years back I had a similar issue which turned out to what I can only assume to be a fox chewing through the wiring - made a real meal out of it. There have been a couple of other posts on the forum reporting similar so might be worth doing a search on here if you want more info.

Cheers for that, will. Have a look at the loom.

On another note, sensor #2 shows 0degc. It's this correct? I have read that there is no sensor #2 hence the vaule of 0.

However on My mates 2011 van, (same 2.0l engine but 84ps), he has a reading for sensor #2 showing up similar sort of temp range to sensors 1 & 3. He also has the same fault on sensor 3.

great, cheers for info. will order one and should do the job T:

any tips for removing old sensor? did it come out ok or was it a bit stuck?

will post some pics once i have done as it seems a recurring problem / question for a lot of people

I've corrected the link to the part details in my post above.

Removal was straightforward, with easy access once I'd put the front up on the ramps. Sprayed some WD40 the day before onto the sensor, but it was quite fresh and clean so no corrosion.

The sensors seem to be prone to go if the motor has been sitting for a while (months). Mine went on the way home having just bought it :( Still at 212k miles, its not too bad.

I had the same problem, coil light flashing.
Fault code P242a.
I bought a new sensor. Fitting was quite straightforward, hardest part was probably disconnecting the plug! Its the brown plug, the upper one of the 2.
Access to the sensor itself is best done from above, the rest is done underneath.

Also had the same problem. Getting the sensor out is a simple task. And if you bang it on a test meter on the bench and warm it with a blow torch you will soon see if it is faulty. No change in resistance = knackered sensor. Unfortunately the new sensor is about £100 but mine has been good now for past 2 years.
