Recently ordered an eberspacher D2 and this shiny Easystart Timer but just realised they are incompatible as heater is too old.

I have opened the box to have a look but that is all. It will work if on the sticker of your heater it says 'H-KIT'.

I would like to swap it for a 701 or 801 plus some cash.

Hi mate, I'll check my heater in the morning, but it's less than a year old so could be promising.
Potentially up for a swap if it's compatible and if you're still looking?

Probably not worried about selling mine dude, I'm not all that sure what the difference is to be honest ( you seem like a man that knows, is it just the diagnostic function? )
Just stumbled across your advert, and it looked like an upgrade my heater would likely be compatible with :)
