Lady owner of VW T5 174bhp - doesn't want to be ripped off at garage. First time this happened garage flushed out system and replaced coolant - thought all was fine til today when again coolant warning light come on - have recently just added engine oil as was low. Presume it's getting through to the coolant somehow (and no I definitely haven't put oil in the coolant by mistake)! - any ideas or thoughts gratefully received.

WaterPump is common problems but you'd have coolant in oil not other way round. Faulty oil cooler can cause oil to contaminate coolant. Seems strange though as you are loosing coolant and oil, must be going somewhere unless it's being burnt in which case headgasket or damaged engine block - altho I'm no expert.

I'd recommend replacing the oil cooler, fully flushing cooling system with good detergent a few times then use vw detergent in system for a few hundred miles the reflush with plain water before adding vw g12+ antifreeze.
oil pressure is higher than coolant pressure therefore oil in coolant when oil cooler fails.
its a pain flushing properly but well worth doing right first time

not sure if I'm actually losing coolant as the liquid is over the maximum line on the coolant bottle by about 30mm. Would you recommend using a good local garage or go direct to VW?

Take it too a local specialist, my experience with main dealer vw hasn't been great. It seems if they can't fix it by plugging Vagcom in they aren't interested.

And they arent cheap!

Maybe worth taking it to a couple of places and see if they are saying the same thing..

Makes sense as oil is transferring to coolant, reducing oil quantity while increasing coolant quantity.
There are lots of good guys working in dealerships but due to trying to earn a living with wage/bonus structures spending time going the extra mile for customers is a thing of the past, it takes too long.
Would say find a good recommend independent garage to replace the oil cooler.

Hi there first time I've posted on here ! I've been having the same problem and just collected my t4 from the garage after them fitting a new oil cooler ! Fingers crossed that's the problem sorted ! But I still have oil in the system ? what's the best flush additive to use as the garage has said this may take 100s of miles before all traces of oil are out the system
