Extracting SKC from separate immo 2

Do you know if it is possible and if so, what is required to extract the SKC from POST 2000 T4's?

Mine is a late 2001, and obviously something changed on post 2000 T4's, as i see all sorts of posts about how to reprogram keys on older T4's but almost nothing for newer (2001 onwards) T4's.

I need 2 new keys, as the single key i have is on its last legs. The dealer wants a whopping ÂŁ440 for 2 new keys, I know i can probably get it cheaper elsewhere, but i'm doing some homework as well to understand what is and isn't possible. I enjoy a challenge, so if i can extract the SKC and reprogram the new keys myself, I might just have a go at doing so.

The vag tacho clones sold on ebay are complete junk, the driver discs contain malware (viruses), so I wouldnt touch it with a barge pole, certainly not on my computer (Disclaimer: this is only talking about the counterfeit, fake, pirated vagtacho, the genuine one is brilliant apparently).

On the later T4s, you can use Vag EEProm Programmer or VAG K+ Commander and a blue KKL (vagcom clone) lead from ebay. Im fairly sure I've read out a cluster dump using that setup, but I've sold my spare T4 cluster so cannot test it.
Thanks D-9, that's really useful.

I've been reading up on this a lot and learnt a fair amount already.

From what i've read so far, it seems the first thing i need to do is identify whether my immobilizer is gen 2 or gen 3, as everything else hinges on that. I assume it is the immobilizer type that is the difference between pre and post year 2000 vans.

The Ross-Tech site is quite informative, but doesn't make it clear when European vehicles started using the gen 3 immobilizer.

My understanding is the cable you mentioned together with VCDS will help with this.

Anyone know if there is a way of physically identifying the difference between the immob2 and immob3?

I'll add more detail as i progress but if anyone can fill in any gaps as i progress, it would be great.

VCDS will let you check the immo - it will return the number from whose ID you should be able to tell. If it returns nothing then you can try and connect to the instrument cluster instead and look for the ID. On the page you linked to it tells you how to tell the difference between the immo generations from the ID
Yes i read that :). I've ordered the KKL cable today, and it looks like i can use the free VCDS-Lite for this part :)

If you remove the insert to the cluster which is just a few screws and fairly easy, you can look to see if you have the separate immo box on the left of the clocks - I'm pretty sure that in that case you need to desolder the chip as described originally in this thread
When you say "the insert to the cluster" do you mean the plastic surround that sits above the steering wheel cowling, and in front of the clocks? Held in by 2 screws at the top by the looks of it. I'll remove it over the weekend and have a look and see what's there.

So I removed the steering wheel cowling and instrument cluster inset panel this evening, and this is what I can see.

This box is located to the left of the cluster. I assume it is the immobiliser? Any way to tell if it is an immo2 or immo3, or is there no way to tell without connecting to it using VCDS? Not sure i want to mess about removing it, if VCDS will tell me.

Hello,

sorry for late reply - that's you immo box - I reckon that means you have to go through the procedure above. d-9 will know better than me, but I'm pretty sure that means it's immo 2 and you need to read the chip and vag-tacho/k-commander etc. won't do it for you.... I may be wrong though.
No problem, I appreciate the helpful replies :).

This is the bit i'm still not clear about.

There seems to be an Immo2 Gen2, Immo2 Gen3 and an Immo3. The Ross-Tech site has some info on these but doesn't make it clear when the switchover dates for each happened in Europe. So i've currently no idea which one i've got. I thought as mine is a late 2001 T4, it had the immo3, but i'm not entirely certain. Does anyone know which T4's have which immobilisers?

My KKL cable and copy of VCDS lite turned up today, hopefully the lite copy can do enough to help identify which immobilizer it is. Typically i have a broken wire on my OBD2 port, so i have to fix that first lol !!

Assuming it is an immo3, I am under the impression i can simply read the code through the OBD2 port using Vag eeprom programmer as mentioned earlier by D9? I have a copy of this too now.

Getting there....slowly! :)
