well it was gonna happen eventually....

bought my 2.5 102 TDI, four years ago with 60k on the clock and a slightly tricky 5th gear, now its on 105k and the clutch is on the way out..:(

so the question is rebuild or replace???

a recon box would be great but is it necessary? it feels like the syncro mesh has gone on 5th, but it never grinds you have to double clutch it in or "have a second go" with the gear stick at 40+ mph, at high revs it feels unbalanced and one mechanic said it could be the first bearing on the input shaft.

with all that in mind its not got any worse in the last 45K of driving, even when there bad they're still good! A: so could just change the clutch and cross my fingers .... but know that's just asking for trouble

i want the best long lasting solution as i use my van for work and often tow a heavy trailer, so thought i would put it out here.

any advise?

Hi,

Check your pedalbox!

Stick your head in the footwell, press the clutch pedal with your hand, and closely watch the master cylinder.

If there is ANY sideways movement of the master cylinder and the bracket it's bolted to, then your pedalbox has failed!

Unfortunately the 2.5, 102 bhp vans are the most common for doing this.

I offer an exchange service or if you are close enough then I also offer a fitting service while you wait too.

Cheers Trev.
