Recently found coolant had fallen below min so light came and also found dreaded white sludge on oil cap.
Immediately started searching and everything seems to say dreaded head gasket

BUT van is driving absolutely fine, is this possible?

For the moment I’ve just put in some more coolant and continuing to drive it, is this wise or will I be causing more damage ie more cost?

if it is head gasket what sort of cost are we talking? Vans a 2.5 tdi.

only owned a few months and not really used it properly so would be gutted if have to spend a fortune (and I’m wondering if this is why it was up for sale?)

Thoughts wanted ( but secretly praying for Re assurance!)

I have had white sludge on the filler for about 100K I think it's condensation. Oil has always been fine on the dipstick.

Check for water leaks everywhere, the bloody things peace oil and coolant at every excuse.

Either you have cheap oil in it or the engine doesnt run much hence the condensation. Usually radiators rot at the bottom corners and start to loose tiny amounts of coolant but, if its not a serious leak then dont worry too much about it...keep some coolant spare and top up as necessary !
