Hi all,

My 1991 1.9D 1000 has just given up on me. the alternator has been playing up and draining the battery so I disconnected it, I have a new one on the way and I carry a spare battery (just in case). I was driving down a dual carriage way and the engine just cut out and will not start. (I didn't have my spanner to change the battery to check it)

My question is if the alternator has seized would that cause the engine to cut out and then not start?

Or would you think the engine has seized?

I am going back to the van later today to swap the battery and see if it starts.

The alternator has nothing to do with your timing belt all thats happened is the battery has gone flat hence engine cut out you should be able to just fit new regulator to the alternator i have had the same 25pound fix T:

So I got my dad to tow me home as it was too dark to look at anything. I swapped the battery but it still wont start. is there a possibility that the engine was starved of fuel so it will take a short while to filter back through?

or is there more damage than I first thought.

The cambelt is still there
