Stupidly locked the key in the van and dont have a spare :-(

I went out for a cycle, with the side door open, clicked lock, put the key in the bike bag and shut the side door, which promptly locked.. and i'd forgotten to take the cycle bag! Grrr

Currently on 10 days for a replacement key from VW, or smashing a window to get in.

Is it worth calling my breakdown? Can anyone suggest anything thats going to cost me less than £80 for a replacement side window!!

Thanks!

I had exactly the same thing happen to me the other day. Was pulled over by Mrs Plod and while she was talking to me on the pavement the van locked itself with the key on the passenger seat.

Well then the most amazing thing happened. This bloke in a range rover pulled up to tell her that some pigs had escaped from the farm down the road and were all over the main road. She said she would radio some colleagues. Meanwhile did he know any way for me to get into my van as it had locked itself with the keys inside.

He pulled up with a toolkit for getting into vehicles that are locked. I watched in amazement as he proceeded to get the door slightly open enough to get a hook in and press the button and unlock the doors. So Mrs Plod asked him how come he was able to do this and why he had this kit. He presented his business card and he was an AutoElectrics and Vehicle Security specialist.

Now what are the chances of that then?

Anyhow it doesn't answer your question, just an amusing story. However, it might be worth seeing if there any such guys in your area that you can call.

Meanwhile he told me to go to a VW garage and have the thing that causes this to happen disconnected. Of course I haven't as I'm now being uber careful with the keys when I'm doing stuff in the van but I am considering asking next time at the garage.

I know it is unlikely with my newbie status low post count but if someone doesn't mind PMing the way to get in if this happens to me.

It already has once( only had the Van a few days) but I was on my drive so the spare was easily got however I don't fancy asking my father in Law to drive up to Scotland with the spare if it happens while we are camping :)

I had 3 options

1 - VW would do me a replacement key for £60 but needed to see the V5 and would take 10 days!
2 - Smash passenger door window - replacement fitted £80
3 - Locksmith £85 no get in no fee...

I went with No.3 and he got in :) said it normally takes 10 seconds but because I only ever lock with the fob the key mechanism was really stiff..
He is also going to cut me a spare just to do the door for £20

So all in all, a rubbish experience but at least I am in the van!

Ive had a spare non electric gubbins inside key cut by Timpsons for £10 and carry that on a cord around my neck whilst camping as I did the same thing in France with no spare key! Putting the window covers on must have pressed the lock button, slid the door shut and heard a horrible clunk! Pulled the door apart slightly and pressed the unlock button with a thin stick!

Apparently you can open a door over the phone by someone at the other end pressing your spare as you hold your phone towards the car? Not sure if it still works but it used to! A:

Have a close look at the drivers door handle - if it's the same a the current Golf there is a plastic cover on the end of the handle (opening side) that clips on & off & the manual keyhole is under there.

If thats the case get a key cut from a decent locksmith which will get you in but not start it. Keep the key in your wallet or somewhere outside of the vehicle.

My key was cut at Timpson key/shoe repair place on the high street, it was a bit of a battle and he was really not keen on doing it. It's just a standard looking key, no buttons or electric gubbins. Was there not someone on here a while back getting them done for £10?

Our local locksmith cut us a non chipped key for about a fiver.

He said he could replicate the chipped key for about 40 - lots less than VW!!!

when i go surfing I had one of those water tight bags round my neck with the key in.. works well and I am not leaving a key to the van on top of the spare wheel then.. as many do.

Well even the kitesurfing instructor had his van taken...... ok.. by his mates and they just put it on the other side of the car park.

He was lucky.. glad you got in. T:

What a great thread! Packed full of tips which will help those locked out of their vans, gotta love this forum.
As above I use a combination lock box when I go surfing, when camping I hook it up near the spare wheel (so it doesn't bang around) with the spare key in it.
