Hi,
My van is an 03 88 special with the 2.5 TDi (blue) engine. When cold it struggles to start and is getting worse now the temperature is dropping. It seems to be worse when I'm below half a tank of diesel. I changed the glow plugs and tested the wiring, thats all working. When the engine's already warm it starts fine.
It's been suggested the if the timing is wrong then that could cause it. I got a cheap Vag Com cable from eBay and tried to check. The TDi checker tells me the timing is too retarded to plot. Is there anything else I need to check and can I adjust the timing myself or is it something best left to a garage. There's a diesel specialist that timed my old 2.4 pretty cheaply.
Or am I completely on the wrong track and something else could be causing the poor starting?
