Hi dub people,
I’m taking my first steps into the world of getting myself a T5 for family adventures so at this point I’m a complete virgin.
I’ve decided 100% on getting a van with a pop top but I’m intrigued by the amount of space at the lower end of the roof. I’ve seen pop tops which are hinged but otherwise are fixed to the actual roof level of the van (presumably almost everybody will use this as the ‘foot end’)
Additionally I’ve also seen pop tops where the ‘foot end’ isn’t hinged but infact has a small scissor mechanism to raise it that little bit further in the air.

Is the scissor mechanism more desirable than the hinged version because of the extra space or does it not really make too much difference inside? Does anybody have any real world experience comparing them side by side?

If you buy a van without a pop top already fitted then can I suggest Vamoose in Sheffield if you need an installer?

Rear hinged mechanism not scissor lift. Always positive reviews, been around for ages. Made in house. Very well thought out USP's from experience.

Do their own RAX roof rail system for boards / kayaks etc. Very, very strong insulated roof. Bomb proof marine fabric. Custom thermal inner liner available on pre fitted pop studs.

I love the neat external look with the inner gas lifts and marine grade st-steel hinges to rear so no trapping of fabric in those pesky scissor lifts.

No silly bellows bungee required here! Also more solid in windy weather than scissor lifts IMO.

Also a nice ice white or blue ( for night ) LED ceiling light is included in the installation which is a nice touch.

The heavy duty Vamoose fabric is velcroed all round to allow easy "escape" access if required.

Absolutely love the work they did on my van last March ( Colour matched Pop top, deluxe bed, new rear window, diesel heater, awning rail , rear spoiler fitted ). 2 days work in total.

Reasonably priced. Incredibly professional with immaculate premises. Simon, Sandra and team were amazing. (y)

Having furniture and RIB already fitted in the van wasn't an issue unlike some other companies (looking at you Austops... )

Any negatives?

If you are taller than say 5' 9" (my height) I would say it is a little tight for foot room due to rear hinge design. Obviously no issue for kids.

(No brainer for me though for the extra rigidity and no worries about trapped / ripped fabric!)

Easily solved with an additional matching board I use to extend bed length once you are up there. Makes a very handy shelf while the bed is up and stops your pillows falling down...!

The standard bed size is 1050mm wide x 1900mm length, with the additional "extension" board it's over 7' length in old money so no "foot" issues at all

The Outdoor Revolution "top of the pops" SIM fits it perfectly. (very comfy BTW)

Front window and ventilation vent only so perhaps a bit hotter in warm weather. Some like the additional windows, zips, meshes, panoramic options that other manufacturers supply.

I preferred it to be more weatherproof especially for UK camping. More openings, more leak points IMO but horses for courses...

One neutral colour fabric choice though which might not suit all.

Here's some pics . Note I have added a California storage net to the upper roof and yellow 3D printed bobbins to the roof straps.

If it's not clear the bed board folds down and has an extra hinged section that then folds over to increase the length. This allows the light to stay exposed.

I hope this is of use to anyone considering a pop top

It's such a stunning van it could be classed as camper porn :ROFLMAO:

Are those rear quarter vents functional?

Cheers! It's nearly finished so will upload some pics soon

Just dummy rear vents from Travelinlite , seems to be the norm for the Swamper look I guess...
