Some of you will have seen my 'broke down in France' thread already.

I have a 2.5 TDi auto and have just been told by a French garage that it will cost €5600 to repair a 'faulty gearbox'. How far off the mark is this quote?

Thanks
Shane

funnily enough I am in the same situation as you, in Southern Belgium my clutch broke and I got it recovered back to a garage near where I work in Belgium, the gearbox is also a bit knacked so I am getting a recon box fitted at the same time as a clutch....

...I may be missing something here but I struggled to find many recon boxes available in the UK, there are many professional reconditioning shops in Germany for T4's, using Google translate I have arranged a recon box to be shipped to me here for 900 euro incuding shipping, taxes and 12 month warranty............might be worth a try looking on ebay.de ;)

Ha 5600 they're taking the p mate. Get it recovered back to the uk and then ask around on here for recommendations of gearbox suppliers. If it were mine I'd get it converted to manual and either way it'll be nowhere near 5600. Sounds like they've got a quote from vw for a new box maybe.

:eek::eek: I have an invoice from a VW main dealer in Slough for a new auto box for the 2.5 TDi Velle we bought recently - its dated October 2010 and the box cost around £2500 ........... VW dealers do not "repair" the boxes, they swop them out and fit a new one. Have your van recovered to the UK..........they are trying to rip you off or simply don't want the job, you said it was a Citroen or Renault garage which probably explains why!!!! A recon from an auto trnamission specialist will be less than a new one and nowhere near £5600............

I'm certainly hoping that a used/recon box will be much cheaper. They are quoting for a new box from VW and 17 hours to fit it. I'm hoping someone who knew what they were doing could do it in less time?

I am having my gearbox taken out and hopefully a recon one put in, the garage are quoting 8 hours to do this, although it's a manual box I would not have thought an auto would take 9 hours extra :*

mines 1.9 td so may be different but i bought my gearbox for £110 and had it reconed for £100. Fitting it was a pig as i did it on my drive but £4300 sounds like a bigger rip of than a wax job on yer knackers!

i have just used ep transmissions in wakefield to get replacement recon box for my T5 1.9 5 speed, got great deal at £800
give them a call, they could maybe advise you, give them a call Lee on 01924 239532 or mobile 07783989391

if you can get it home you'll save a fortune, if your new cover can get you here great, if not get a vehicle with a trailer to tow it home is probably the cheapest option or have you got a really really really good friend who you gonna owe for the rest of your life to come and tow you home
