I had approx 0.5l top up oil remaining before last service and an extra 1l after service. Since last october the van has used this 1.5L over 8k (i think) miles.

How much is 'normal' for topping up between services?

Well, the 2.5's are known to like a drink between services, although some do, some don't.

Mine is on longlife servicing & uses about 5ltrs every 20k.

Some people say that 1ltr/1k is OK.

Don't know about the 1.9's or the 5.1's.

My 1.9 looses half its dipstick in about 1500 - 2k miles, roughly thats about 500ml of oil. I use longlife oil too.

Vw stated that the older t5 model would use approx 1lt per 1000kms seems a bit excessive myself but I've seen them about 500ml to 3000 miles sometimes though the level can be incorrect, bet offer a nats cock off the top T:

I've had my T5 2.5 59 plate for a month now and have done just over 3000 miles she's used no oil at all and has done 118000 miles must be the older and more miles the more they bed in Rasp:

I thought it was excessive - but probably using .5l / 2k miles which now seems ok

I just turned 300k miles in my '56 2.5. On 10k service always with 507 00 oil. Only very rarely do I have to top up, probably only 5 or six times in 5 years, and then only when I had leak at turbo (now replaced). But once had to return to stealer to have them remove overfilled oil at service - idiots.

Ive got an 08 2.5 130 bhp manual done 165,000 and dont use a ltr during service intervals of 20,000 mls but a mate who has an 05 130 bhp auto 260,000 uses 4 times as much as me maybe its because the engines have been designed a bit eco friendly :*

same here - same motor and oil, except mine's had DPF removed and re-mapped tp 179bhp. topped up oil a little twice in 1.5-2 years. doing motorway miles and changing oil regularly (each year or 10-14k) with long life oil make a happy engine :)
