i thought bunging an intercooler on it was the tdi route..doh! what is the tdi route then. and what is the point of putting the intercooler on if its not going to improve the performance?..

TDI means Turbocharged Direct Injection if yours is a 1.9TD its simply a Turbo Diesel. TDI'ing yours would be changing your TD lump for a TDI one, something like a Golf 1Z engine. An intercooler cools charged air from the turbo by forcing it through the matrix which has outside air passing over it, that cool pressurised air is now denser before it enters the engine and provides better combustion.

If you look on Aggies TDI masterclass thread you'll see how he mounted a front mounted intercooler and also that with a few other small mods got 110 BHP out of his 1.9TD before he TDI'd it. That 110 BHP isn't really sustainable but you can certainly up your 68 BHP with a few tweeks.
