I've got an intermittent problem with the brakes. This is what happens.... when I press the pedal when first braking it brakes ok. Then if I need to brake again within a few seconds, the brake pedal goes very stiff and the van brakes very poorly as if i'm getting no assistance from the servo. Then 30 seconds-ish later it's ok again for the first braking, and then stiff afterwards. Any ideas please?

Hi,

What engine do you have?

If it's a 2.4L 2.5L then it sounds like the vacuum pump has passed it's sell by date.

Has it been, or is it still tapping when ticking over. If so get a new pump (Don't weld the pushrod false economy and potentially could ruin the engine)

Cheers Trev.

I've found the fault. There's a t-piece in the hose from the vacuum pump to the servo with a tiny pipe coming away from it that's connected with braided rubber hose. It goes off into the bulkhead with the heater pipes. That little pipe had come away from the t-piece. I put it back on and now the brakes are perfect.
I can only assume that air was escaping here and causing loss of pressure in the servo, or at least meaning it took longer to build up pressure between each press of the pedal.
Seems like a very weak link in the system with potentially fatal consequences!

cracking bit of advice.....my brakes have been poor since i got the van , i had new discs and pads fitted and it always passes mot but never felt right to me.

i just assumed as this is my first van that this is how van brakes are.

just had a new clutch fitted and they seemed worse....so after reading this thread i found the excact same problem with the small bore pipe off.

refitted , test drive and nearly flew through windscreen......
