Hi

Just wondered if 15/40 oil is ok for a 1998 none turbo 5 cyl 2.4d
Some people say 10/40 & 5/40 but thought these might be for the newer
turbo engines.
Europarts list 15/40 & 10/40 for the 2.4d
To be honest I havn't got a clue what all these numbers stand for. People say to me I wouldn't use anything other than 10/40 on my t4 then others say, yea I've always used 15/40 on mine.
Help please!

U need to check the oil spec. It should have a 6.digit VW code or at least something equivalent
The 15W40 oil will be thicker. So it U say do park outside all winter, only drive short distances, live at a steep hill etc I`d tend to say go for the "lighter" 10W40
I`d also stay with a good mineral oil if I`d be U

I have on my older cars stopped spending money on super-duper-sleek-shiney oil(cans). I buy a good 10W40, replace it every 5-6000 kilometer inc Filter & all is well. I like to change oil on the late Autumn so the lub at least is up to its best during the Winter
