Hi All
I took my t4 2.5 ? 5 cylinder on the motorway yesterday for about 10 miles,as i pulled of the engine made a light tapping noise on the overrun or when just slowing down in gear.After the engine cooled down it seemed to disappear only to return once the engine got back to running temp.
any ideas please

what grade of oil have you got in?

How many miles on clock?

does it sound like tappets or is it deeper in? (i know it sounds a silly question but ....)


seems to point to low oil pressure mate

thanks for the speedy reply
the oil was changed about 10,000 miles ago
i think it was 10/40 grade ( i cant really remember but it was the users manual recommended grade)
140,000 on the clock
and yes it does sound like the noise my old ford escort made when the tappets needed adjusting.(it does not sound like a deep down problem)

As well as the above advice when did you last have your timing belt and tensioners done?

If after service the tapping is still there try pressing brake pedal if noise goes it's a small rod that wears down in servo don't quote me on this but I had same thing and it turned out to be nothing to do with engine hope that is the case

The belt tension pulley fell apart about 20.000 miles ago , no damage to the engine as i had it replaced before it completely failed.
I had new belt and pulley fitted then. i sort of thought the belt was self tensioning but i am obviously wrong. I shall be changing the oil over the weekend so i could tighten the belt at the same time if its DIY job. (advice please )

Hi mate dont touch the cambelt tensioner its set when new belt was fitted otherwise you may cause the belt to fail I would suggest changing the oil but put an oil flush through the it first T:

If it was only done 20K ago then your belt should be fine mate like people have said above just leave it.

Changed the oil and filter over the weekend but the rattle is still there.the noise is still there when i use the brakes any other ideas please ?

Tried all of the above with no luck so booked it into a local garage.After listening to it the mechanic said the big ends have gone.
Took it to an engine specialist today who agreed with the first mechanic.
So i have left the van with them to remove the engine and strip it down to "have a look"
I will let you all know the outcome

I doubt the big ends have gone mate, these engines will do 500K on the bottom end.
Get it to someone local to you who knows T4's inside and out to give you a diagnoses.
Most mechanics have not got a clue when it comes to a T4 unless they work on them all the time.
You would be the third person I know who was wrongly diagnosed with this on this forum alone.

The tappets themselves are quite cheap mate. But you would be recommended to fit new timing belts etc as you have to remove the camshaft.

The noise is defiantly engine related and has got slightly worse. The "engine specialist" said it is uncommon to have big end problems at this milage but not unheard of,All i can say is he seems honest ,and has good reviews from previous customers,So its the old thing of having to trust someone so why not him ? as i say the plan is to strip the engine and review the situation then.
so fingers crossed

Be careful because dripping injectors can sound like big end failure.

Hi all
Here is the latest
Just had the garage on the phone ,the good news is you were all right about the big ends, no problems down there just the normal wear.
The bad news is one of the pistons had started picking up, so re-bore, new pistons, cranks shell (as the motor is apart ) new belts etc. I will keep you posted.
