Does anybody have any idea what these loose wires are for? They overheated and were smoking after start up, they appear to have melted the housing they were in (second pic). I don't want to start the van again and take to the garage in case it sets on fire.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated T:

That looks like a melted fuse holder for the glow plugs, make sure you insulate them until you can replace itT:
