Correct me if I am wrong, the old VW Beetles had drum brakes (except 1302S and 1303) so there was never a problem with moon discs but if they go on a car/van with disc brakes, won't they cause the brakes to overheat and fail?

Can't see it, there's plenty of airflow under the van to cool them.

But the heat build up in the concave of the wheel will just hold there, it is like trying to refill a full bottle of hot water with cold water by just adding cold water to the top, it won't work.
