2001 Caravelle 2.5TDi with 290K miles -passed MOT today but with advisories -rackend (osf) has slight play and trackrod ends deterioration osf and nsf -

Can anyone advise on the approximate costs involved to replace these and is that probably best done before the next MOT?

There was a third advisory -nsf wheel bearing has slight play- which I presume should also be attended to sooner rather than later.

Just wondering what sort of costs i am looking at for the above work and if there are any recommendations for a decent indy in the Midlands who might be interested in doing this work and the cambelt as that needs changing soon - Birmingham, Derby, any reasonable Midlands base or mobile.

However you get this work done (garage / DIY etc) make sure you get genuine VW parts. I made the mistake of using cheap pattern parts for suspension work, and now I'm having to replace most of those bits after only a couple of years - real false economy. Thankfully I'm able to DIY it, so only paying parts costs, but I've learned my lesson.

Tracking needs to be set up after having track-rod ends done. It's a pretty quick and simple job, so I think I'd just entrust the whole thing to a good independent VAG specialist to do. The wheel bearing needs a press to do properly, so again a garage job unless you're really keen. I stripped my hubs out and took them to the garage to have the bearing changed which saved a bit - but mainly did it just 'cos I like doing that sort of stuff.

Sorry but don't have any recommedations for garages in your part of the country - no doubt others will have.

From memory I think genuine track rod ends are around £37 and as they are the easiest suspension components to change I would say that they would only take an hours labour to change both sides. Garages usually charge around £50 an hour and as you would probably need them tracking after changing I would say it would cost about £200.

Oh and if you're in (or around) Nottingham a lot of people use the Lion Garage:
