Hello all. Ive just been given some bad news for my MOT. The NS front upper suspension arms have excessive play in the ball joints (theyre knackered) NS front suspension arm has excessive play in the pin/bush.
and the rear brakes have seized calipers etc....
I used to have a very good mechanic friend but he is no longer around ...and I cannot afford the quoted £900 + for the repair....soooooo can anybody help in any way...either with a guide with MANY MANY pictures...loan of tools lol....or does anybody want to do the job I:
Joking aside...I am really in a situation with this now so any advice will be VERY much appreciated.
Thank you
Daniel

Now my problems arn't all that far detached from your own and a lad on here (mechanic) isnt charging half that!

Fair enough calipers arnt cheap (£55-60 per side) but everything else is!

A guy in Cullompton, not that far from you charged me £70 to do mine, I supplied the ball joints. I can dig u out his number if you want it. There is also a guy in bridgewater with a decent rep that was offering this service, supply and fit for reasonable money. Tell the garage to do one.

That's really cheap, my upper just cost me £45 for the part. I have been quoted £120 to fit, but am gonna do it myself this weekend.
I am gonna make a tool as they look so simple I aint paying over £200 for one.
If it works ok I may b selling the tools for around £40, watch this space ;)

Hello ...and thank you all for your replies.
I am going to literally list word for word my failure sheet and report....to maybe get an accurate ish quote ?
here goes...

offside track rod end ball joint dust cover excessively deteriorated....

nearside front (outer) front constant velocity joint gaiter deteriorated....

nearside front (front) suspension arm has excessive play in a pin/bush

nearside front upper suspension arm has excessive play in a ball joint...

offside front upper suspension arm has excessive play in a ball joint...

parking brake has no reserve travel...

nearside (low) rear parking (secondary) brakes imbalanced

I asked them to give the wife..cos I was at work...a better description of work / cost involved...and this was their report....

strip rear brakes and report on no reserve travel....
nsr brake caliper handbrake arm seized, handbrake cables have no movement and not returning fully...,
osr brake pads wearing unevenly, poss piston seized in caliper...
cost to replace items = £368 approx
replace ns outer cv boot £90 approx
excessive play in osf and nsf top ball joints and play in top arm bushes...cost to replace ball joints and bushes = £300 approx
all costs subject to stripping and parts avalibility

Thats the lot....apparently he told the wife it was the brake side of things that would be costly ?
Anyway...thats as much info as I can give you mate.....if it is possible to tell me a price for all this ? please do....mayeb a price for me to come to you...and you to come to me ?

Thank you very much !!

In the interest of finding the quickest and cheapest route I would be greatful if you could dig out that phone number for me ...please.

Thank you very much

Nsr handbrake arm could easily be the cable it's self which is about £12. Jack up the rear and release handbrake you should be able to detach the cable from the handbrake arm on the calliper. Once done move the arm back and forth and see how freely it moves. If underneath looking at the rear of the calliper when your thurs the arm anticlockwise that it move the brake to the on position, when released it should spring back clockwise to a stopper, urll see it when looking. If it doesn't go all the way back to the stopper without assistance then there is a fault with the calliper. I had this and would get it free with lots of wd40 but would then seize up again within a day. If arm is moving freely then check the cable. I removed my cable a very simple task to do. Once off take hold of the outer casing with one hand and pull the cable back and forth through the outer casing. The casings have a habit of braking up stopping the cable to move freely. If it's binding up then replace the cable or do as I did and pull back the rubber at the end and fill with oil.

I had advisories for my ball joints this year so will need to get mine looked at in the near future.

Osr calliper seizure. Whip the wheel off and remove pads from calliper and with a calliper wind back tool wind the piston back which should free it off is seized. Maybe at the same time replace the pads if low they aren't expensive and give the sliders a good grease up.

I'm kind guessing that they don't want to do the job, hence the stupidly high quote! I've not had to work on the brakes on mine yet, so don't have any other input than new cables on a handbrake can make a world of difference. Cv joint, easy complete driveshaft £55 delivered from J&R.
The ball joints, do not buy cheap ones or you will be there again sooner than you would hope. Hire a tool or buy a used tool and sell it when finished with it. Question is do you have the time to do it yourself?

I don't know if its any help to you but I always use PE Services in Kingsteignton, always seem very capable and although probably not the cheapest I wouldn't use them if they charged the sort of price you have been quoted. Although not a VW specialist I know they look after quite a few t4's there, been keeping mine going for the 6 years i've had it.

I would happily travel down and do top ball joints for you,I did quote you before which was cheaper than the garage quote..
Although the quite you had was very exsessive, remember people do need to make money, they rarely do it for the love of it...

Pm me again if you need any help, sounds like you might....to be honest mate if you have to ask if the van needs to be jacked up extra,,top ball joints and driveshafts may not be for you...

Happy to quite you again for anything you have left needing doing..

Right..Im going to do it myself..It might take me a while..and Im sure I'll get stuck here and there..but at least it wont cost me anything apart from my time.
Could anybody please tell me what tools I will be needing for the job...just so I can sort them out for when I start it...I have most things but just want to make sure Im not going to come across something I dont have..like experience..and general mechanical skills lol.
Seriously though..any advice will be very much appreciated....Id like to start tomorrow ...with all your help.

Top ball joint remover tool or a huge hammer and lots of luck.....

Breaker bar and descent impact sockets

Good luck with the top arm bushes...bit of work to remove them...

Thank you....I think I can get the top arm bushes pushed out for me by a mate so thats no problem....If I can do most of the work the little things wont matter so much.
Any idea what sizes for where with the sockets ...impact sockets will have to be a borrow so sizes would be a great help.
Thanks again
