Hi all, I've been to view a T4 caravelle auto. It's R reg 1997 and has a 2.8 vr6 engine. It's got 165,000 miles on the clock.

It looks in great condition cosmetically but I've got no pictures to post as it's not mine. I wondered if you could use your years of experience and knowledge to assess what it might be worth.

Ball park figures will do just want to make sure it's not over valued. I'm sort of asking what you'd pay rather than what it's worth because it's only worth what someone will give for it but any advice or valuations appreciated before I proceed.

Why is that? Are auto's unreliable? Costly to fix? Or just not flavour of the month?

I love the auto and when it works it's silky smooth, they do have reliability problems and are expensive to fix. I ended up removing mine and fitting a manual box, however I wouldn't hesitate to have an auto again, providing I could get one at the right price.

Cheers Spanners how much did it cost to turn it into manual? I think this particular van has had the auto box fitted with a reconditioned not too long ago so hopefully that'll see it good for a few years.

Don't rely on it, if it was done by a specialist auto box company with a good reputation then it should be OK, but if they just do the box and not the torque converter at the same time, then faults can re-occur. I don't want to put you off, as I say I love the auto, I just want to give you honest advice, do a search on google (better than the forum search) for VW T4 Auto.

I converted mine to manual for about £600, but that is only because I did it myself and the gearbox came with a brand new DMF and clutch + slave cylinder. You could easily add a grand onto that price if a garage does it and you need new clutch etc.T:

Woah yes that's all out of my skill range. I'd definitely be getting someone to do it so that's a wedge of money. I think if I went for it I'd have to trust the recon was fitted properly but thanks for the advice.
