Hi all,

Not my first T5 but new to the forum.

Picked up a T5 Transporter last week, its a German import LHD 2.5 PD130.
Its down on the German logbook as a 'Transporter / Caravelle' but registered over here simply as a Transporter MPV / Diesel car on the logbook.

As far as I can tell its more of a Shuttle S as it doesn't have the interior trim of the Caravelle you'd expect.

I bought it without the rear bench included, need a new one but being LHD these seem to be at a premium.

Its on 300K KM (approx 186k miles) and in fairly good condition bar the usual cracked exhaust manifold, broken springs and in need of a bit of TLC.

Ideally want to keep it for a few years, will likely upgrade to a newer one eventually but in the meantime want to do a few mods.
The issue is that my current insurer Adrian Flux, who say they specialise in import and modified insurance wont touch it as its a German import, apparently the underwriter, Highway, are a bit tetchy with German imports which is insane as all T5's are made in Germany???

Anyways, managed to insure with Admiral with minimal mods such as wheels and tinted windows but want to do a lot more to it, engine, exhaust, remap, lowering and exterior mods but think this will be punitive with them?

Weirdly, I first got quotes for it being a shuttle S which were £200+ cheaper than it being a Caravelle????

Is anyone aware of any insurers that dont take the pee with mods?

Been with Adrian Flux for years with modded trackday cars and they've always been the cheapest.

Cheers for reading and TIA for any advice!

Don’t know about cheap but APlan are insuring both my T5s and no problems with mods / seats (unless it’s 8 or more seats - don’t know what happens then! Maybe nobody knows?) 9 seater shuttle owners probably do come to think of it 😷

A Caravelle in Germany and elsewhere is not the top model, it's equivalent to a Shuttle in the UK. What we call a Caravelle is actually a Multivan pretty well everywhere else. A Shuttle is actually called a Caravelle on the sticker on the seat base.
You'll pay a premium on your insurance for a left hooker over here, about 10% I think.
Expect "Dan" from Adrian Flux to rock up later!

Try Brentacre for an insurance quote too - they cover pretty much any mod (and imports). I'm insured with them and can continue modding my vehicle without any change to the premium (other than power increase mods beyond stage 1 remap), I just have to notify them so that they can be added to the policy. So far I have the coilovers, 20" alloys, extra windows, bodykit front & rear, side bars, swap to Caravelle rails & seats in the rear, stereo upgrades, remap to 180bhp, lights, leather seats, cruise control, MFSW etc. etc.!

If you're looking for a new rear seat try Kernow Transporters in Cornwall. I bought my full-width leather & alcantara Caravelle seat bed from them (£1300) - delivered to Leeds at no extra charge!

@Kelster:
Its down as a 5 seater but has the 2 single seats in the front and only 4 seat brackets in the back that are offset, assume this is for a double seat and for some odd reason there aren't any brackets for the additional single seat?

@roger:
Yeah, its pretty basic inside, just the card door and boot panels, no carpet in the rear, just the cushioned plastic floor. Will replace the panels with some carpeted ply at some point. It's got these windy things to do the windows with as well and no outside temp display that I can see?
I've seen the kit for eleccy windows on eBay fairly cheap.

@64 SPLIT:
Will try Brentacre , currently with Admiral as an add-on to my house insurance.
As above I'm with Adrian Flux for 2 of my other vehicles, both modified and Adrian Flux is pretty cheap with these. What youv'e said is pretty much what I want to do although may go with a stainless exhaust and a sports DPF (my last Transporter I had years ago had cheeky DPF delete/gut out) as I want to keep it legit. As for the rear seat, I'll have to check out what was originally fitted, a 3 or a 2 seat bench? Have seen some on eBay for about £300 which is as much as I'd want to spend to be fair as they will rarely be fitted.

Cheers for the info guys!

Hi.
I'm surprised you're having issues with ourselves for an imported vehicle. Most of our schemes have no issues with imports especially European ones. If you wanted to PM me your details I'd be happy to take a look at see what's going on.
Regards,
Dan.
