Hi guys, considering buying a camper which is built on the T 4 1.9 td van, 1998 SWB with 166k on the clock. How does this van run, any good points and bad points to look for would be appreciated, many thanks, Roketron.

Hi Ron,

Can I ask how much you're looking at paying for the 1.9TD? I'm selling my 1.9TD in Swansea!

They're great vans, nice simple engine which is better on fuel. It does make a difference how much weight you're carrying though!

When you are looking it over, don't forget it is a seventeen year old vehicle with a lot of miles. It might only be 10k per annum, but it is still a lot of miles. How would you feel about a mondeo of this vintage? VW are no more reliable than any other mass produced vehicle, so expect to be spending on consumables. It may have a nice interior, but look past that, and at the base vehicle - remember the phrase "chrome won't get you home".

There are some very nice, reliable vehicles out there that will deliver many more years of good use - unfortunately there are also many, many more that are absolute rubbish, cobbled together builders vans with windows cut in and a massive mark up.

Good Luck.

:)

that's what we've got but a few less miles, hightop camper.
does us fine, but it's different if you're used to a car, enough power for us as we are never in a great hurry, & no major "it's a common problem with that engine", none of the ecu probs & c 38mpg.
as said most cars that old would be in the scrapyard by now, but we get full use out of ours esp as a camper/everyday/load transport which makes up for any foibles.
checking u/s, arches, cills etc for rust is more important, curing that is more expensive than mechanicals

Ours has been WELL!!!! Serviced and weighs in at just over 2.3 loaded as a pop top camper and gave a t5 a shock when he over took us up hill coming back from cheltenham,he had a minimum of 84bhp and we only had 68bhp,we sat right on his bumper for 2 miles, the cars behind us diserpiered in a cloud of smoke mainly ours so a WELL serviced 1.9td can go when asked to and will return 36.8 mpg all day long when not abused, that's proper miles as the speedo is correct now for the distance travelled
