Hi there first post on here, any help is more than welcome! 2.4D T4 1996 syncro aab engine. 120,000 miles. This is my second t4 and my second major oil loss problem! Basically my van van is going through ever increasing amounts of oil. Now using about a litre every 2 weeks! The strange thing is the low level warning never comes, just a single flash of the oil pressure light just after startup. I do have a visable which the local garage have confirmed is coming from the cam-seal. This runs down to the sump. However the van leaves no oil patches when parked at all. My question really is, before I go ahead and have this repaired. Is it really possible that that much oil is being lost from this leak under pressure whilst driving?? Surely there would be more oil on the engine? The van drives faultlessly apart from this with no smoke except small puff on startup and coolant level never changes.I do get a slight oil burning smell in the cab on motorway driving. Any advice greatly appreciated..starting to think I'm unlucky with T4's! Cheers - Luke

My old van was a 2.5tdi had same problem but worse spent 900 quid replacing turbo and no difference! Had all the garages stumped. I guess it could be piston rings but you'd expect some smoke! The difference is I can actually see. Leak on this one (cam seal) bit doesn't look like anywhere near that amount is coming out..ideas anyone? :)

* Bump * Anyone else got any ideas or had this before? Seems quite common with T4's

the thing is on a compression ignition (diesel) engine you will not see smoke if there is a little oil being burnt in the cylinders....Why, because it is burning as clean as the diesel.....to wit you could add engine oil to your fuel and as long as it is warm enough to flow through the pump/injectors you would just burn it. While a lot of ring/bore wear might leak enough show up as smoke a small amount will just get burnt with the rest of the charge....in fact it should add to fuel economy (but it will also add to overall costs).

I am with the previous post on this, if it is not showing on the floor and its not spread across the underside of the van then its going to be worn rings/bores or valve stem seals and burning the oil.

my last 2 cents (I doubt it) is that since petrol engines will smoke with worn rings/bores et all, it is presumed diesels will as well, well they won't..... (they will once the compression is so low that ignition is poor). I wonder how much oil these engines burn when they are new (broken in that is)? If anyone cares to know I had a 450,000 kms 2.5 gas T4 that burnt no oil between changes as long as I kept it under 110 KPH. It had a little oil consumption at higher speeds, but it had always been like that from 300,000 kms on. If anything the low revs oil use was lower at 450K kms than at 300K kms. Lunch is over.

..On my previous vehicle that used even more oil valve stem seals were changed making no difference, and compression was also fine. I ended up selling it on as couldn't get my head around it. It's not really a small amount of oil my current t4 is using..A litre every 2 weeks is a lot! I've never had any other diesels do this except t4's! My local vw specialists have had a look and its going in on monday, they still seem.to think it could be the cam seal forcing it out under pressure as there is an obvious leak from there. Thanks for the info guys..will keep u posted, fingers crossed :)

There is no pressure behind the oil seal to have it forced out unless the engine breather system is blocked which on the ABL is very unlikely, if it is the cam seal the oil will be running down inside the cam belt cover. if the oil is running down the front of the engine behind the injector pump to the sump, then the most likely source is the cam/rocker cover, another common source is the breather housing on the front of the engine above the oil filter, this only has an O ring seal. Whatever it is lets hope they find it quickly and it turns out to be an easy fix for you. *<:)>

Hey thanks for the reply :) yeah that's exactly what's happening oil is running down the inside of the cam cover and onto the sump. It just doesn't look like as much as I'm loosing! Hopefully when they get it apart all will become clear! It's the AAB engine which I'm guessing is similar to the AJL? Hopefully that is the problem and it'll be a simple fix..and not the piston rings T:

Update on my van..not good at all :( . Cam seal was leaking which garage fixed at a reasonable price..however i think this must have been masking a more serious problem! After driving the van to Devon for a surf trip, the oil needed 2 litres to get back to normal. Then on the way home it started to use coolant also..stopped topped it up..then horrific mechanical grinding noise. So freewheeled her to the layby.. My friend who know a bit about mechanics reckons oil was in the coolant and that oil, coolant and bits of metal were coming from under the van!!! he reckons main bearing or something is shot.
Needless to say van came home on a recovery truck.
So no idea what im going to do now as it seems like its gonna be a new engine job and funds are very limited!..the garage are gonna come and inspect it free of charge in the new year but im not optimistic. Shes a lovely van tho so worth doing but will struggle to find the money especially if i go for a recon. Seems a shame because she was running so well before as well  . Any advise at all would be very welcome to a very down in the dumps t4 owner! I have the added embarrassment of having to drive my mates battered transit at the mo now too..but hey at least i have transport!
