Hi All. I thought I might do a build thread about my Swamper styled 2015 reg T5.1 T32 140 after a year of fettling and tweaking.

I love reading other folk’s posts and build threads and have found some really useful help, ideas and inspiration so I hope this of interest to others.

So in September 2021 I sold my LWB T5.1 180 BTDi Caravelle and became “vanless” for a few weeks while I hunted for a new project.

It’s surprising how bereft you feel with no van on the drive.

I knew I wanted a reasonably newish T5.1 (or maybe T6), ideally SWB (LWB was a bit big for the driveway ).
Prefered 6 speed ,140, tailgate and air-con. I had a budget anywhere from £15K to £25K depending on the van and work required.

I found ( and then kept coming back to ) a yellow ex-AA 2015 T5.1 on eBay that was fairly local ( only an hour away ), a reasonable price and had a decent semi converted interior with R&R bed although still a hardtop. It had 2 x side windows fitted but no rear tailgate window.

This appealed on a number of counts. It ticked the tailgate, air-con, 6 speed, 140 boxes etc but I also loved the yellow colour!

Having most of the interior work done would save me a lot of time and money but also still give me the flexibility of adding my own touches as well as adding some of the major stuff like a pop top.

I could see in the advert images that it had a quality interior including RIB seat, furniture from Camper Worx in a Vohringer blue grey metallic finish, a solid composite worktop with an interesting radius fridge step out. It looked to have some nice black alloys which turned out to be nearly new Oz 18"'s.

Appliances already fitted were a 12v JustKampers fridge and Dometic 9222 combi sink / hob. It also had a full set of decent internal silver screens, a nice bonus.

The van had a full AA service history up to 90K as well as more recent entries including a cambelt and pump change.
Current mileage advertised was around 110K.

So quickly booked a trip to view, met the nice young guy selling it, had a test and inspection, did the usual checks, bit of a haggle, handshake and bought including a full tank of fuel, screens and an unused matching table, rail and folding leg.

Happy with that as it left me with around £6 to £7K in the kitty to complete the van to my liking, possibly more if required.

I had a list to sort out from my inspection:

The front driver seat was a bit worn and needed new foam, cab USB wasn't working , the engine warning light was coming on intermittently.

Tow bar not working, a couple of very small dinks and chips, rear bumper had a "lump" under the tailgate.

The roof still had the GPS and aerials attached plus the (supposedly) plugged holes from the AA lighting bar.

The Sargent K115A electrics just needed the external hook up sorting.

But, fundamentally, nothing major so time to crack on.

I had decided ,virtually from the moment I saw it, that the final outcome was going to be more of a Swamper style than lowered "lean ‘n’ mean".

I had downloaded loads of Swamper van images off the Net as inspiration and really like that style of van.

First jobs were some wing decals, black sequential side indicators and wind deflectors.

Big fan of deflectors , even have them on my little Kia Picanto daily now !

Awesome build, man!
One of my favourite parts is that cubby hole digi clock! Love that 😂 defo getting one of them!
That cargo box on the bike rack I like as well that’s an awesome idea gonna have a look into them!
Love a swamper look, mine was too far gone to attempt it but I’d love it seeing as everything around me is mountains 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
That dash table you got, how is that fitted? Is it secure ?

Cheers pal. Glad you like it !

I live in the High Peak, Derbyshire so not exactly mountains but not exactly flat either!

Here are some links

Thule Back Up box and Easy Base. Always some on eBay at a good price usually with the Easy Base.

I have 2 x Easy Bases, one set up for two bikes ( re-used bits off my old T4 Fiamma rack..) and one with the cargo box on.

Not Thule RRP 🤑 but all pretty cheap bought used off eBay.

The cargo box is huge inside, takes the awning, chairs, wc , shower tent , the Wife and loads more.

The Amazon LED clock, pretty sure it was this one. Tight fit but it will go in! It's very sensitive and comes on over bumps but I like that, it's like someone reminding you of the time!

The little snack table is discontinued now as far as I can find which is a shame as it's really good. It was a present from my daughter originally bought off Etsy.

It works well though as the holder stays in the dash recess permanently and the table just clips in when required ( it also has a small magnet to "lock" it) .

It is pretty solid , certainly enough for a snack or takeaway , but I probably wouldn't put a heavy laptop or similar on it.

There are some Etsy links in the replies above for Campervan searches etc, I find it a useful site to buy unusual or bespoke items. It's safe and has PayPal.

Cheers! It took quite a bit of finding as I wanted Matt black not gloss black. The Frosted black is really nice, textured a bit like Raptor.

Got it from DST Automotive. My garage chap installed it when he re-fitted my rear bumper, said it was pretty easy ( I guess he would though, he's a mechanic...).

Hi, glad you like them and thanks for reading my thread.

Here we go:

Strap "bobbins":

Seat covers:

Hope this is of use.

The covers are OK fit wise, could be better but the quality is nice and the padding is comfy. Definitely look better than the original fabric!

I have ticked off a few more jobs from the To Do List so thought I would update the build thread:

Fit new inner door seal to Drivers side

Fitted the new seal to the drivers door. Not as easy a job as I had hoped, quite a bit of trim needs prising off and also the plastic step which was awkward as it has the diesel heater inlet fitted.

Anyway all done and much better as the old seal was really worn out.

Remap

The remap is booked in for Thursday 23-03-2023. It's at Motion Motorsport in Stoke On Trent.

Will be the usual map from 140 to 180. Looking forward to the drive back...!

Transporter HQ smoked sequential rear lights

Got a discount code off eBay so treated myself to a set of T.H.Q LED rear lights. Went for the new T6.1 smoked style with sequential indicators.

New drive away air awning.

Picked up an ex-demo Outdoor Revolution Cayman Combo Air Low for a great price again with an extra discount code from eBay at the time on camping gear.

Just needs a clean and was missing the ceiling rod which I picked up off the Bay for £24. Bargain.

I really wanted a forward facing awning rather then sideways like my last Vango and the front and rear entrances with the large porches are brilliant on this .

Also fitted a new internal LED 12v strip light above the sliding door. I have a light in the pop top roof and under the cupboards but really needed an access light.

Nice and bright and It's switched rather the van door activating it which I preferred as we have the door open a lot on site.

Bought a little 20W solar panel to sit on the dash for trickle charging the main van battery. Came with lots of leads and a basic controller. For £60 you can't go wrong.

Spot the "Van Cat".

Next jobs on the list:

Beatnik decals to rear quarters and lower tailgate

New leisure battery ( original is worn out )

Passenger seat swivel plate (MC Craft )

Think that might be it but I guess there is always something to spend on....

Another quick build update with yet a few more things ticked off...✔

It has now had a remap done at Motion Motorsport in Stoke-On-Trent.

The van was 140 and didn't feel too much of a slouch but occasionally I found myself dropping a gear or two on the bigger hills.

Anyway done now and it drives so much better with a nice pick up across the range and more power on the hills.

Also I had fitted a digital GPS / OBD speedo a while back and forgot to take some photos for the build thread so here we are.

I love this gizmo. I like digital speedos in vehicles and had previously done the Aussie speedo hack on my old Caravelle display.

It gives an accurate speed via GPS to compensate for the big tyres and has loads of display settings, code reading option from the OBD connection etc.

Next on the list :

New leisure battery

Then a swivel seat base for the bench.

Whats the output now then ?
A link to the gps gizmo please 😁
Haven't got any paperwork but up from 140 to between 170 and 180 with the "power / economy balanced" map they said.

Felt great in the urban and hilly country route home. Not been on a motorway yet to test the overtaking power.

Feels a lot more instant though without flooring the pedal. I'm not bothered about speeding about though, it's not that type of van.

Here is the link to the GPS / OBD speedo. My mate has the exact same one in his van as well. So much easier to see your speed than the VW dial IMO
