Hi,

I recently got a 2003 ex Thames Water T4. It started great until the temperature dropped recently. There's no cold start lever on the van.

I removed and replaced 4 out of 5 of the glow plugs. One I can't get a grip on the connector to remove it. I tested the new plugs with a spare battery before fitting and the all glow fine. I tested the leads and am getting 10v ish. I expected 12 but do know that T4 suffer from voltage drop in places like the headlights so this could be normal.

When cold the glow plug light comes on for a longer amount of time, when it goes out I try to start and it take 10-20 cranks to start. It blows out a load so white smoke (understandable after cranking like that) then runs fine.

When warm but not up to full temperature it's hard and take more cranking, I suspect the glow plugs don't go on for as long.

When at full temperature it starts fine.

I've been told the relay 109 would be bad and causing the voltage drop, could this be right?

My other theory is that the timing is off, would that cause the symptoms I described?

If anyone can tell me what I can do to test or diagnose it further that would be great.

10 volts a glow plugs is normal. This sounds to me more like a timing issue. I am assuming that you have a 2.5 as you said no cold start lever? These should start easy when warm, no glow period used.

Great (well not THAT great but you know what I mean!)

I know a good diesel specialist who did wonders with my old 2.4 when the pump timing had slipped. I'll take it to him and I'm sure he'll have it running nicely before I know it.

Hi Mate just wondering what you did to solve the problem of your bad starting back in march 2011, as I'm having the same issue with the same symptoms. Was it timing? or relay? Is it worth me changing my glow plugs? Any help whatsoever would be great!

I think that was the problem, there was a thread on here that showed how to swap it and it starts fine now.
