Pop Tops and Driving Speeds

My LWB roof was fitted by Reimo's UK importer CMC and I was never informed of any speed limit.

I did notice once at about 85mph there was a chatter from the front pod so I sealed around it (bar the drain holes) and it shut up completely.

I'm an automotive analysis engineer and if I knew a component wasn't fit for the operating conditions for the vehicle in which it was being used then I wouldn't sign it off. If such a part went into production and failed then then a big OEM would hit us with a bill so big we'd be out of business overnight.

Its just like buying speed and load rated tyres - why bother if you drive an empty van slowly?

The roof is now fine and secure all the way up to max which I've only ventured to briefly in the name of science. I dont race my van but if I wanted to drive everywhere slowly then I wouldn't have bothered buying such a big engine. I just keep up with the traffic as and when the conditions permit. I certainly leave a larger gap than driving a car whilst on a motorway.

What speed do you think VW tested the California roof too? I'm thinking they may have just tried it down the straight at Ehra-Lessien ? Come on folks, a T5 180BiTDI will max out down there. They wouldn't have packed in the test at 130kph when the van is made and sold in a country which still has derestricted autobahns.
