I have a 04 1.9 t5 which has a popping sound through the air box when cold once warmed up or at motorway speed it goes away was told it was hydraulic lifters/ camshaft. Garage said it may be worth looking at rest of engine as it has 260k on clock, full service history and owned by me from new. Once sound has gone it runs/pulls great. Anyone know of good vw garage near Wolverhampton, is it a big job for camshaft change, cheers

Thanks for reply, stour port is not too far for me what would you recommend to test camshaft and do you think it would be worth changing it on high mileage engine? I was thinking maybe a compression test as well too see if engine is worth fixing or changing .

If you have had it serviced correctly with the correct oil there shouldn't really be any major problems. The camshafts on these engines weren't the best and wear out and make a hole in the top of the hydraulic lifter. Because this happens it then makes the popping back sound through the airbox. I sometimes have the same thing on mine, but I am going to replace my camshaft and lifters as mine feels sluggish and unsure about the oil quality from when it had been serviced. I personally think that yes the engine will be fine and all that it would need is the cam and lifters and an oil change.
