Evening everyone,

Now its getting a bit chilly in the mornings I was left with a dead battery the other morning.

My t4 (1998 800 special) never really started first time even in the summer and it would never start without the cold start/pump rotator thingy. Last week I had a fan belt snap and the battery has been completely drained a couple of times this months (left the lights on like a *insert expletive here*.

I went out to try it today and run a meter over the battery and it started second try so I checked the battery is getting a charge from the altornator, it is and at around 14.5v when idle. I didn't test it with revs as I was on my own working on the van.

Now I'm hoping its just the battey on the way out, which leads to two questions:

a) does it sound like a dying battery
b) Not enough cranking amps on the current battery (I have no idea what it is on the current battery, and it does look dated). What sort of battery should I be looking at.

A lot of questions in there but can anyone give any advice etc please.

Thanks in advance,

Dready

Speak to an auto electrical specialist who can drop test the battery, as it may appear fully charged but have no oomph left innit due to age, the cold, and recent hammering

They to can advise on the right cca for your needs. A cheap battery is not a good idea unless you have a spare and are handy and practically minded. I want to just turn the key and go.

Parasitic drains are unusual, and not a major problem for a good battery, but does yours have any non standard accessories fitted that you haven't checked the wiring of?

As above. If you go to a good car spares place or auto electrician, they will be able to put a meter across the battery terminals and tell you in a few seconds if it's holding a decent charge.

Cheers guys, I tested it and it's charging but I have no clue if it's holding it.

It's due a new battery anyway so I guess a trip to the local garage is In order.
