Hi,

Firstly apologies if this has been posted in the wrong forum, but on my bike rides, I ride past a 2002 T4 that's for sale for £3500.

I found the ad for it on Facebook and checked out its MOT history

There are two things highlighted in the monitor and repair section

Nearside Outer Drive shaft joint constant velocity boot severely deteriorated (6.1.7 (g) (i))
Nearside Front Upper Suspension arm ball joint has slight play (5.3.4 (a) (i))

Apart from these two and a potential replacement windscreen, the current owner looks like they've kept it well maintained.

It's got 245k miles on it, but the ad states the cambelt has been done.

Being new to this world and with the van in my current budget range, please don't roll eyes ha ha

How much if I took on the van would it cost to get this two advisories above fixed?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Darren

CV joints.....just replace both with new ones.....won't break the bank.
Ball joints (upper) are a pain, but again, anyone with the tools can easily sort that....again..DO BOTH SIDES!

245k is high mileage, but not "out of this world". (Depending upon engine type!)

"Cambelt has been done"...when?
Should be every 50k or 5 years, to be safe.

Also, depend upon what "type" it is.
Caravelle/Multivan get more money, GENUINE window van not far behind...."converted" van's can be a gamble depending on who/how the conversions were done.

All T4s are "worth what the owner thinks/the buyer want to pay".

Check the wheel arches and underneath, door cills, especially sliding one.
ANY new paint work is suspect!

Cambelt and water pump need replacement every 4 years or 60,000 miles if it’s a 2.5 tdi I’ve been told.
Not sure about other stuff but when I researched the above the cost to replace those was about £600 ish.
Sounds a good price compared to what I’ve seen.

Do check for rust, this is very important!!! If it's all good....

Offer 3k and the 500 you have saved will sort your two issues.

t4's rot.

if anyone tells you otherwise, buy some magic beans from them also😁

Rich.
Are there any years of Transporter that rust less, and when you say 'rust" what vehicle would you compare it too ? My wife’s Toyota has its fair share of rust. Is there any makers that don’t rust in the UKs weather ?

Thanks for the replies everyone, really much appreciated.

The cam belt was done last year.

Looking at the photos, it looks like there are the usual rust spots around the arches and bumpers, but the garage I use does specialise in VW's too, so I think if I needed anything done, they'd be happy to help.

I might go and see if I can get a closer look.
