I have vw t5 1.9 2004 172k miles. Recently noticed black smoke coming out of the exhaust and power loss at high revs. I've searched through many posts but can't seem to locate the problem. I'm also stuck in france, which doesn't help. I have cleaned egr and changed fuel filter, also checked for air leaks and is inspected all air pipes. Can't seem to locate any cracks or leaks, though several of them seem very loose. I don't have any problems at idle. Engine sounds fine except for a hissing noise at high revs towards the higher gears. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like a leak with the intercooler somewhere?

What would be the best way to go about checking for a leak in the intercooler. I'm new to this. Thanks

Its more than lightly a pipe thats either split or coming off at one of the joints. A Seat car I had did did the same thing, (Black smoke and power down)One of the pipes had failed that connected onto the intercooler.
