make sure the bush, on the bottom of the gear linkage, (right under the stick, under the van) is in place and not popped out.
if the stick is kinda loose and you can put it into reverse easiler than 1st, its that bush :)

I had this, and it was the bush on the gear box end...

There is 2 - one is on the end of the rod that is gearbox side, and 1 is on the end of the rod thats engine mount side, for want of a better explanation.

Mine had broken and when I tried to locate first because it was pushing against the split in the bush it wasn't pushing the gear box connector bit up properly...

If that doesnt make sense, let me know and I can take a photo to explain...

this was also a problem on my mates T4

We both replaced both of our bushes, and gearbox is lovely now :)

If its what it was on mine you access it through the engine bay...
just look down at the gear box and you'll see the white plastic bushes on the end of the gear rod... should be able to reach down and see if the one the gearbox side is looking damaged at least...
