Replace 1.9tdi BRS with suitable equivalent?

So my understanding is all the VAG 1.9tdi engines are essentially the same, but all have different codes and outputs? My BRS engine is apparently on its last legs, breakers want a huge amount for any engine labelled 'transporter' but golf, Passat, a4 engines are all cheap. I know the main difference between BRS BRR and AXB AXC is the crank sensor which is in the rear crank oil seal so I matched that part number with a whole bunch of engine codes from VAG cars, so they have the same sensor. But what else is different? Manifold, turbo, EGR all look different on these various engine but I can swap all that, cam cover looks a little different on some, also can be swapped. I couldn't find much on the forum or elsewhere about the BRS or BRR engine compatibility. Anyone managed it? :*

Thanks for the info, quite simple part swapping then although it seems like it's everything bolted to the base engine is changed. I might end up with a used complete T5 engine to save the time of building it up. Seems a lot of the other model engines I've found are high mileage anyway.

Yup I have done some searching and found BXE and BLS are both considered weak rod-throwing engines. BKC has been mentioned as apparently the older models are stronger. I can't find, or afford, a T5 engine that's suitable, stupid rare BRS/BRR. So I think i'll try a BKC and build it up using the parts from my BRS and i'll source some newer injectors of the same part number to fit it, and a new turbo CHRA. Should get a decent engine from all that for less than a used BRS.

Hi guys

How did you get on fitting the bkc into your t5?

I have a brr t5 that has coolant issues(pressuring no heaters etc etc)stripped the engine to find cylinder one has suspect water/coolant marks .so I'm looking to put a re con engine in rather than spending lots on a knackard unit

Any help would be massively appreciated

Cheers
