I personally think T4's have more character
Just make sure you use a proven T4 restorer as there are lots of common rust areas they can identify and repair properly.
Make sure they put it up on a ramp and inspect the whole underside for rust ,before they quote you or your cost could double before it's too late.
If you love your T4 , go for it
Just remember you probably won't recoup your money you spend on it .

To me it's a simple choice. Buy a new daily driver & take your time on the T4 restoration.
You won't get much for the T4 in it's current condition anyway.
In the end the T4 will probably outlive the new daily driver if restored properly & looked after.
Imagine all these 40 somethings who will be desperate to get their hands on a good T4 in about 10 years time & what it will do to your investment. ££££

I have a 98 T4 Syncro. Purchased as a wreck. Needed lots done. Don't underestimate the cost. I must be up at somewhere between £15k and £20k and still more to do. I actually sourced a 2nd van to pilfer parts from as it was cheaper. If the van has tons of rust why not find a good shell and transfer stuff from your old van. Ian at Syncronutz has a few good shells which he'd happily part with.

Its not even a consideration....T5's are a different thing....they should have their own forum and stay out of ours!!
Im sick of searching for information on T4's and being linked to VWT4 Forum T4 / T5 section...ARRRGGGGGHHHH
If you want to own a NEW van then fine...but dont pretend they belong here...theyre just a van for now...come back in 25 - 30 years when our T4's are worth a fortune and your new vans are just starting to develop some character :)

Unfortunately our t4‘s will be scrap and probably will be long gone in 25/30 years the way the government is hounding the combustion engine...no matter what model t4/5 you have... unless it’s driven by batteries ?

soon enough we won’t be able to drive into most cities even current hybrids are in the firing line....

You could indeed find a rust free T5's and think you've cracked it. Mines 2005 and looks pretty good.

But, a T5 is complicated compared to a T4.

For example, on my T5 there are constant electrical issues that are so complicated a specialist is needed, if you can find one that knows Vw's properly (intermittent wipers, central locking, internal lighting). Mine needs 'special' expensive oil (2.5 5 cylinder) for a service. The turbo problems mean that most mornings I have to restart about a 100 yards up the road on some days as it goes into Limp mode especially on cold mornings (?). For the same reason I'm careful when overtaking even when the engines hot. The solution to this problem is not clear, do a search and find out for yourself, so I'm reluctant to part with £1000 to find out its just the same. If/when the engine goes it may not be viable to replace, and there's nowhere near me who I trust who wants to consider replacing it. So the van one day may be mint and scrap at the same time. There are usually a few on eBay that are being split but look like new in the pictures. I'll get more for the captains seats and the rock roll seat with sliders then for the van, probably. The engine subframe isn't rusty yet but it is inevitable. And i've probably forgot something.

I love driving it but I have the above issues at the back of my mind.

Swings and roundabouts really. I just thought that I would give you an insight into ownership. It's my daily driver, 200 K miles.

Hope that helps. (depressing to write!)
