Hey all
My stalk and loom have arrived and I'm eager to get it all installed. My van has the later blue clocks fitted already so how much is there to it? I have no instructions just the hardware.

I've read maybe 15-20 different threads about this subject but 99% are about fitting this later dash into an earlier vehicle and getting the MFA to work. Retro fitting the cruise was super simple, I found the 4 pin plug and presto cruise installed.

I have just one query on the loom that comes with the kit, it has a green square 4 pin on one end and a five in a row red plug on the other, from this red 5 pin plug there is a single brown/yellow wire on its own that has a single pin black plug on the end.

The red five in a row plug fits onto the stalk, the green plug goes into the back of the dash, I get that bit but where does the single black plug go? will it be obvious when I'm elbows deep?

Any help please before I dive in?

Thanks
SB

Right, so the green plug doesn't go into the dash, it goes in the back of the fusebox somewhere?
That single wire with the black plug looks just like a plug that going into the front of relay 174?

Any ideas folks?
Help!

*update* ok I found the socket! the fusebox has a plug locking system! bah!
This image gave it away

Just the single wire left to find.. The single brown/yellow wire on its own that has a single pin black plug on the end.
Anybody?

The first guess was right, continuity shows the original brown/yellow wire going to the front of relay 174.
So that just leaves the solid brown wire.. any ideas?

*update*
I now just need to activate in vagcom so it would seem.

Solid brown wires are usually used for earths by Volkswagen.
Your right I checked it for continuity and found it was an earth and continued putting everything back together.

I'm now going round in circles reading the same posts and getting no where.

The stalk is installed everything is back together, everything is the same as it was before I started.

It just needs activating?

I'll worry about the temp and fuel sender after.

Yep it might need activating, try changing the first zero of your softcode to a one and see if anything changes.

Bugger, I'd have thought someone with the answer might have stopped in here with the answer..:*

Instrument Cluster Soft Coding

?? xxx - Options

+01 = Brakepad Warning active
+02 = Seatbelt Warning active
+04 = Washer Fluid Warning active
+08 = Seatbelt Warning active (NAR only)
+10 = Seatbelt Warning Driver & Passenger active (NAR only)
+16 = Secondary Display (Radio/Navigation) active

Add the values of all the installed options together and the total is the first two digits of the soft coding Wink

xx ? xx - Country

1 = Europe
2 = USA
3 = Canada/Mexico/Latin America
4 = Great Britain (GB)
5 = Japan
6 = Saudi Arabia
7 = Australia

xxx ? x - Service Intervals

0 = fixed Service Intervals (PR-QG0) without Oil Level/Temperature Sensor
1 = flexible Service Intervals with Oil Level/Temperature Sensor (PR-QG1)
2 = fixed Service Intervals with Oil Level/Temperature Sensor (PR-QG2)
3 = without Service Intervals (USA/Canada)

xxxx ? - Distance Impulse Number (K-Value)

0 = All Engines/Transmissions (Impulse via CAN)

1 = 4345 Impulses/Km or 6991 Impulses/Mi
2 = 3528 Impulses/Km or 5677 Impulses/Mi
3 = 4134 Impulses/Km or 6651 Impulses/Mi
4 = 3648 Impulses/Km or 5870 Impulses/Mi

i've tried softcoding to 17 to no avail..

Are you sure your clocks have the mfa feature? i had to get new clocks and they didnt need coding for them to work.
Thanks for your reply
I'd have thought so my van is a 2003 AJT with the "late blue clocks" as in this post

When I open the controller I see -
Vag Number 6ND 909 901 component -> Gateway K <->CAN 0001
Softcode 00000

So "Functionally speaking there were two different types of cluster (although outwardly they look identical) and this is where the trouble begins! The first type uses discrete signals for the speedo, RPM, airbag, and back-lighting (i.e. these are wired directly to the pins on the blue and green sockets on the back of the cluster) – these are the clusters that were fitted to all 1.9TD T4 vehicles (06/1999->) and some 2.5TDI up until ~2001. The second type of cluster used CAN-bus to send the messages from the relevant body module/ECU for this functionality to the cluster. This basically means that the pins for the discrete signals do nothing, and if you put the cluster in a non-CAN based vehicle some or all of the functions mentioned previously will not work. "

Same as user Penbryn's picture here

Should work right?

The clocks above do not have MFA.

There are many many different models of T4 clocks, it is extremely unlikely that MFA clocks were fitted to your van without the stalk.

MFA clocks have a split central display, the top half is lights, the bottom half is a LCD display. See pic below.

Isn't that a t5 dash?
So none of the nice t4 blue dial instrument clusters have mfa or FIS Fahrerinformationsystem (Driver Information System) clusters

No, its a T4 one with bling rings fitted. First pic i found on Google.
T5 looks like this. Not a massive difference, but you can see that the T5 ones are wider.

Yeah, some do. Its obvious when they do because the central part will be either a half digital display for MFA or a full digital display for FIS.

My Mk IV Golf has identical clocks to the 2003 2.5 TDi T4 that I have (the same clocks SB has...). And this gave me my MPG, temperature, miles travelled, two trips, etc etc... but it did NOT have the split display. It just appeared where the clock has, and allows you to cycle through the different displays.

What are the part numbers? There are literally hundreds of different clocks just for the T4, all with different numbers, all with different features.

Read this link! http://www.t4-wiki.de/wiki/Fahrerinformationssystem

Below is a list of the different clock part numbers JUST FOR THE T4!!
