Sorry to start another 5th gear(ish) thread but I've just had a new gearbox in my TDI88 and it seems to be revving harder for the same road speed. I didn't make a note of what it was doing before so i'm not sure. So can i ask what others' vans are doing in rpm at 70 mph?

Mine seems to need just over 3000rpm to get to 70. feels a bit high.

Van is 2.5TDi (88) with 225/40/17 tyres.

all depends on the old gearbox code and the new code pal. you need to check the ratio`s on etka/elsa they are all different

Ah. Looks like my new gearbox is different to the old one even though it came off a tdi (88).

Tech articles say it should be:
Gearbox code DUH, EWA
5th 0.744 (29:39)
Overall Ratio in 5th gear 3.150:1 = Theoretical Road Speed @ 3,000rpm 74mph

So the new box is geared lower. @rse. I'll see if i can find where the code is on the new one.

Agreed with above. There may be a slight difference in size that would make a massive difference.
If need be, get it remapped. It'll get tuned to work a hell of a lot better to the gear ratio then and you'll notice the difference.T:

Just realised that the wheel size is irrelevant to speedo reading as its taken from the box anyway, sorry.

Unless you use a GPS of course...
