Saw a nice 2.4 van today. When I looked in the water top tank there was some sludge around the filler cap and down the neck. The water itself was clear. There was no obvious debris when I took off the oil cap or on the dipstick. Is this caused by a broken head gasket or could it just be due to normal use?

To me that does not look like head gasket to oil as that is black/brown/white and creamy, what is the water like?

And what is the oil like?

Could it be from using hard water and not soft/distilled?

There was no obvious residue in the oil, none seen when I looked under the oil cap or on the dipstick. The chap said that it did not over heat but I did not really run the engine enough to make out if it did or not. I did notice a little steam when I opened the oil cap.

All in all I think I'll give this one a miss, been burnt by a head gasket in the past :(

Saying that the water itself was clear, no residue on it. I guess it possible could be just lack of coolant change or mixing coolants. Still, not really willing to invest to find out.
