Hi all,

I've noticed a massive spike in the number of fake T4 and T5 ads on Gumtree (and also on Ebay) in the past couple of weeks.

But- these aren't the usual fake ads- the numbers given are not contactable. Useless for scam purposes.

But here's what I think is going on- someone or someones are trying to 'game' Gumtree and Ebay prices down. The ads are always about half the price of a regular bus.

Thoughts?

They want you to contact by email only, that is why you cannot contact them by phone.

They will then offer to deliver it for you as they are working away with the military. They ask you to Paypal/Western Union etc the money over, the van never arrives. You would be amazed how many fall for the scam as a) the van is cheap and they think it is a bargain and b) the think as the seller is in the military they must be trustworthy and c) Paypal is safe for the buyer - not for vehicles it's not.

no the bro is real ive got his mobile and so does the advert, but i know what you mean, my mate was selling a motorbike on ebay and a buyer offerd him £4k for a £1275 bike, sent him the check with instructions, the check bounces of course, another buyer does the same to him, same amount and instructs my mate to pay a guy in a van who will collect the bike to export to Italy the amount above the asking price to cover his espences etc,
so if my mate had of done as instructed to do he would be £4k in debt and bike long gone, sad world isn't it..

Cheers GandT- I'll have a think. I'm sure you're genuine.

Ladymarmalade- as GandT says, the contact details are always bogus. I've rang a few of the numbers, and they're invariably dead. Often there's not even an email address given, and a 6 digit mobile number.

I can only conclude that its designed to bring down the costs of real T4 and T5s by filling GT, AT and the Bay full of cheap (but unavailable) vans.

that's how I viewed it, a good idea for those with a tight budget, a bit like threats of building a motorway behind houses drops resale values greatly, too many cheap things widens the market so you sell cheaper to guarantee a sale, aint it.
whats worse is when they say ill meet you at junction ? on the M? for a viewing/test drive, why, is their house really that LOL:
