I have gear-change probs with my T4.
It's not the gearbox it's the selector linkages.
I had the two white plastic balls replaced last year, then early this month it all went waffly. They were all there but felt like stirring porridge. Had a local non VW, non secialist, garage look at it & they replaced the square bush that bolts on the underside of the floor. Ever since then I keep finding the gears in odd places. You shouldn't have to push the stick hard to the left against the reverse spring to find 1st, 2nd & third & when setting off at the lights I keep scaring people less by reversing back at them. 2nd & 3rd are now crunching a little, or at least very notchy, as I change up but no probs changing down. Have had it back to the man twice but now realize I've wasted my money & am I'm wasting my time with him. So I'm driving around having to guess where the gears are & every day it all feels subtly yet noticably different.
I know its an adjustment/set-up thing. Can't be anything else.
I'm sure this subject has been well covered before & many on this forum will know how to remedy my problem. Once upon a time I'd have had a go but age, experience, lack of facilities & lack of time means I need a good recommended T4 garage in North London (me in Wood Green) as the nearest VW garage want £58 just to diagnose & £200 per hour to touch it. I reckon, & they have suggested thats it's quite probable, that its an adjust-up job with a special tool that they have specifically for setting the linkages up & it'll be a 30 minute job but that's still a hell of a cost.
Any help.

have you tried lubing everything

the part under the gear gaitor is prone to sticking and needs constant greasing for a real smooth change

every now and then my gear change feels a bit sticky and tight and wont go in properly

i pull up the gear gaitor lube up and solves it every timeT:

can change gear with my little finger if all kept lubricated..

A bit of lube is bound to help you get your gear in T4 Lord but, in this instance its not just a case of it being a bit sticky. What has for the last three years of my ownership of this 97 1.9 T4 been a good positive crisp & easy gearchange, has very suddenly become a "waggle it around a bit" exercise to see what, if any, gears I can find & hope they don't crunch too much when they go in. Lack of lube produces gradual symptoms. My prob happened over a matter of minutes & the ape at the garage is not improving things.
