Hello Buslovers, :ILU:

My 2.5tdi has developed a screeching on start-up and sometimes when turning the engine off. I'm thinking it could be the alternator tensioner and wondered if it's a simple job to sort out.:*

Happy New Year!

mine did the same. tensioner was seized and blet was worn out.

post up a pic of the vee side of the belt and I'll tell you if it looks worn.

get on the floor and look up toward the back of the engine on the pulleys side and see if there's any rust where the arm for the tensioner pulley goes through the engine mount. If there is, see if the tensioner moves if you pull downwards on the belt between the crank pulley and power steering pump (engine off of course!). if it doesn't move and spring back it's seized into the mount.

These are the noises mine made:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAXyo-hw9aI

It was the harmonic balancer.

When it went in to VW for the cambelt they said it was fine, I insisted they change it, they rang back and apologiesed saying it was damaged internally, so a visual inspection sometimes wont give you a clue to it's condition, unless it's really worn out!.

After having that swapped the noises/vibrations have gone.

Insanity..

Q. How much did it cost to fix?
I had the cambelt done at VW so hard to work out the cost for just that,
But £500 was full cambelt inc kit, water pump and bottom pulley.

I think bottom pulley was around £120 for genuine vw?

Ouch!

Mine was £50. But I got lucky!

Made a massive improvement, I'm getting 25% more mpg since the belt stopped slipping! The alternator drag was killing the engine power.

Thanks guys, :ILU:

Will have a look and see what's occuring. T:

I hope it's not the pulley and just the tensioner as the cambelt still has some life in it.

Phatty, you've also made me realise another issue. You mentioned about the slipping of the belt affecting power. I bet that's another factor in why my van has felt slighty restricted and not idling as smoothly as it could.
