Can anyone help?!
I filled up the windscreen washer, I had the bonnet open and pulled the washer switch. A large amount of white electrical smoke puffed out from under the steering column shroud. It continued to smoke for about 10secs.
I have pulled off the shroud. It was dusty, but there is no obvious sign of damage. All other electrics are functioning correctly. The (no5) fuse is still intact. There is no obvious sign of burning in the engine compartment around the motor. I rather optimistically slammed the bonnet...
Bang in new switch? Any hints on getting it in??

Prob not much help to ya But my horn caused the same smoking prob as yours.
if there is no sign of smoke damage it may be worth pullin ya steerin wheel off th check the horn metal rings for smoke damage. my horn was not being used when it started smoking. does it smoke again if you use the water?

had the same thing happen to me, after investigation it turns out the windscreen wiper switch has a dodgy contact & burns out, bought a new one from vw heritage for £18 or t4rus stock them also

it says it fits T4, 1.9-2.8 (Inc D) 09/90-10/97 but mine is 2003 and it fits
