Smokey white exhaust on my T5

I don't know if anyone can advise I have a smokey exhaust. I've got a T5 2008 Shuttle (LWB) with the 2.5tdi engine with 145K on the clock. Most of my driving recently (regrettably) is short distance town driving - which I am assuming from reading a lot of the other threads isn't the best way to drive my van on a daily basis...! However, I do plan to buy a small runabout so hopefully this won't be for too long.

I recently had to have my fuel injectors reconditioned as I was unable to get the van through the MOT due to failing the exhaust emission test. Once this was done the MOT was sorted - that was 6 months ago. However, this last couple of weeks I have noticed a lot of white smoke coming out the exhaust again. Its worse when I am stuck in traffic or when I am stationary. The smoke can be quite hot and smells acrid plus it burns the eyes so I don't think its just water vapor. The van drives fine and despite the smokey exhaust there is no change in power when I accelerate although, occasionally the van seems to 'misfire' or something but this doesn't happen very often. Along with many new parts of the last couple of years I have had a new EGR valve plus new glow plugs recently.

When I took the van back to the garage who did my fuel injectors in January they seem to think that the injectors are working fine. However, they noticed that the engine had been re-mapped - which must have been done before I had it as I wasn't aware of this. They also mentioned something about the DPF possibly being an issue and together with remapped engine possibly causing the white smoke. Or is possible the DPF has been bypassed or something? They have recommended I get the engine re-remapped with them and to get this linked up properly with the DPF to see if that might solve the issue other than that it might be a case of having the engine stripped to find the cause.

Question - is it worth paying ÂŁ150 to have the engine - re/remapped and re-set especially if there are no guarantees that this will solve the problem? Are there any other (less expensive) options I can explore?

Also, can anyone recommend any good local VW mechanics/garages who know about T5's in the Lichfield/Burntwood/Walsall area as I think I would like to get a second opinion.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as this is now becoming a bit of an expensive saga for me!!

Thanks for the reply. I have since had the van reset to its original settings. There is apparently no DPF.... it looks like this has been removed by whoever had it before me. :bhd The now van feels like it is running on less power now but the smoke unfortunately, still seems to be there. A it has to be said though that perhaps not quite so bad as it was before. The key for me is whether this would be sufficient to get through the emission test on the next MOT because if it is likely to fail then I am seriously going to have to consider other options!!!

It's been confirmed by my regular mechanic - the DPF has been removed. The VW garage that reset my engine has advised I need to drive the van for a week to give the engine time to 're-learn' and they said fingers crossed this will resolve the smokey exhaust issue. Although, to be honest I am not sure this will work as I have just been a ride in the van this afternoon and its still as smokey as it was before they re-set it. The worst bit is that I have spent a fortune to get this sorted only for the smoke to come back again. I am not putting any extra oil in and the water/coolant level has hardly ever had to be topped up. So I don't know why this has become a problem again especially given that the van still drives as good as it always has done. Surely if there was in an internal problem in the engine I would notice something - such as topping up the oil/water more often than usual or in the performance/drive of the vehicle, or am I being a bit too simplistic??
