Hi all,

I've recently done a solar installation. I have 3 outputs from the controller - battery, panel and load. Could I run say, a 10amp feed from the load output direct to the van battery to trickle charge it? Would the battery be damaged from being trickle charged from the panel and charged from the alternator when it is running at the same time?

Cheers in advance.

I don't think you can connect a second battery to the load output on a regular solar controller, as far as I know it's not designed to be a battery charging regulator.

There are solar controllers specifically designed for charging two batteries like this one

Or fit a VSR as you would a split charge system then when your leisure battery reaches a certain voltage the VSR will close putting both batteries in parallel and charging them both from your solar panel. This obviously also works in reverse when the engine is running the alternator puts out enough volts to close the VSR and charge both batteries as you drive.
