I want to put a leisure battry in a trailer ie to power a winch for example and want to know if its possible to charge the battry while driving. so when the van is not attatched or near i will have a full battry.

Should be possible just change the word trailer for caravan and that's what you've got.

I'nm sure I'll get corrected late but...
you'll need the two way tow bar elelctics http://www.towsure.com/product/2971-N_&_S_(Twin)_Wiring_Kit_(Standard) with the second socket(non running lights) running from a split relay, I guess the feed into the trailer would end up at the battery perhaps with a fuse panel of some description in between.

Sound simple on "paper" :ILU:

You will require the 12S socket. This carries charging on the red wire and also the green wire. The red is normally for a fridge and the green for the auxilliary battery. You can also use the yellow wire to supply the trailer reversing lights. If you already have split charge in the van just couple the green or red to that. White will be earth and needs to be a good quality connection.
