My 1998 2.4D has a strange starting problem when cold. It fires on the first turn of the key and then stops. You then try two or three more times and it will suddenly fire up with a little bit of throttle. Absolutely fine when warm. van has nearly new battery and glow plugs.
Here is the strange bit, when you open the diesel filler cap, there is a massive rush of air into the tank. If you do this before you start the van, it starts fine.
So there must be some kind of blockage, but where??? i'm assuming that when I try to start the van, it is firing first time on the fuel in the injectors and when I crank it over it is overcoming what ever the blockage is. van seems to run fine when going.
Any ideas??? i can see on the manual there is a return pipe to the diesel tank, but could that get blocked? :*

Sounds more like the tank vent to me rather than the return line.

Normally on top of the tank so a bit of a bitch to see without taking the whole tank off.
