On a few occasions now my camper has lost power whilst accelerating hard. It does not cut out but does not respond to the throttle and will only coast along at tick over revs. It seems to rev ok in neutral though. It's like it has gone into some sort of safe mode but is not ideal when trying to overtake:eek:. Switching off and back on again returns things to normal. Any ideas?

Same here I:
Only when driving 'keenly' though

I know my exhaust manifold is cracked, I bet it's the ECU picking up that the requested boost is not meeting the actual boost as the turbos is loosing it's back pressure T:

had similar intermittent problem, try exercising the 3 tube connectors on the n75 valve with a mightyvac, then spray in contact cleaner or brake cleaner, dry out then refit. did wonders for mine. also with mityvac check operation of turbo vacuum actuator.
pm if you need help!

:( this happened to me tonight, just about to give it the beans to go up holden hill (big hill on A30) then wee.. uh, no poke, smooth, reving ok and nice, but it's like i went from 130bph to 50bhp, just struggled like mad, i made it half way up the hill really gentle to make sure i didn't hurt her, pulled over, she was idleing nice and i could rev a little and hear the turbo, went to pull away and just had no go, turned off, back on again, fine, did another few trips (had no choice) and shes still fine, but speaking with my other mates who have VW's they can't hear there turbos (x 1.9 and 1 x 174) where as i can clearly hear mine wizzing away... i guess this isn't great news...

Anyone got some hints tips or advice? i dont get any engine management warnings... only happened once, although has briefly happend a dozen other times, blown smoke and then gone ok, usually just after starting up - hasn't done this for a few months now though.

Ideas please

Happens to mine if I drive it around town for a few weeks, take it for a good blast down the motorway etc, clear out the turbo!

On mine the variable vanes in the turbo stick, causing it to over boost, hence it drops into limp mode, but a good drive clears it and it will be fine for ages!

Of course it could easily be something else...

Make sure its got a clean airfilter, just had mine serviced, and there is no smoke now when overtaking, it used to puff black smoke out before which I can't believe does the turbo vanes any good.

If you you don't boot it very often the turbo vanes stick in the full boost position so when you do put your foot down it over boosts and goes to limp mode. As soon as you start your engine and idle the vacuum is sent to the turbo actuator which pulls the variable vanes out for full boost.
With the engine switched off put your thumb on the acuator rod and you should be able to push it, or just watch it and someone to start the engine and see if it moves.
I'm not saying this is the fault but they do soot up if driven slow

Mine does this also!!! I had my mate check it out many of times but has never found nothing untill it's last service!!! Mines having a massive electrical surge which is putting it into emergency mode and basically shuts the engine down!!! has come across this on audi's and they can put a diode pack on the alternator so he's trying to get authorisation from Vw weather if he can do this to mine and if it's a common fault!!!
I will keep you all posted but it has been 2 months already :*

Just had this problem happen to mine today on the way back from Bustypes can anyone confirm that if the manifold is leaking it makes the engine lose power mine was running fine and I was giving it the beans I had just pulled back into the other lane went to accelerate and had nothing limped it to the hard shoulder it would rev perfect and tick over switch the engine off and back on it was sweet again but I have been getting exhaust smells in the cab when ticking over

I was thinking of taking it to my local vw specialist they do a chemical clean on the turbos.. I am hoping this has only just started as I have only had the van a couple of months and not had the problem before so a chem clean should solve the problem hopefully...does a cracked manifold not sound really loud when it go's being on the exhaust might get them to check it as well as mines up over 200bhp

I have the same loss of power problem on my 174 velle but there is a engine warning flash up on the dash computer and the glow plug light keep flashing. Pull over and turn the engine off and straight back on and all is fine. However it happened twice within 5 miles today on the M4. Stopped for a few mins in the services and it has been fine all the way back to Essex although I made sure I didn't let the revs drop below 2500 if climbing hills. It only appears to happen on mine when pulling up a hill in 6the between 2000 and 2500 revs with the revs dropping.

Any recommendations would be good. I've had the diagnostics done but nothing shows when the fault isn't there?? :*

Its the turbo , either a good clean or a new or recon turbo is what you need. Had the same problem and it was sat in Listers Coventry for weeks and they could,nt figure it out, So called master techs tried n75 and injectors etc but as I told them from the beginning it was the turbo all along.

Reads on Vag Com over boost or under boost , cant remember which.

Hope this helps T:

Hello, This is my first reply to a thread (selling my S3 and buying a T5), but this problem is common accross all the VAG range with variable vane turbos getting carbed up, a good long chug up the motorway at high revs can make it better but quite offten not, (trying to avoid limp mode).

Not knowing what access is like on the turbos on the T5, but if you can drop the turbo from the exhaust manifold then a can of Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner is your friend and just keep spraying then the foam disolves.
