If you go north of Newquay.
Porth Beach - OK but the surf can get a bit messy when the tide funnels in/out of the beach area.
Watergate Bay - Used to like it but there are SOOOOO many surf schools there now you've only got a small public area to surf in. It's also very commercialised.
Mawgan Porth - Excellent, all the day.
Constantine Bay - Good but there are rocks around the low tide line and the lifeguards red flag the beach at low tide.

South of Newquay.
Crantock beach - Big wide open beach with lots of clean surf.
Holywell beach - OK but never surfed there.

Hope this helps.

A bit late for this but I second Holywell Bay to the south. It was used in a Brosnan Bond film too at the start...
Good surf and has a RNLI station too, ideal for when it goes wrong!
Plus on Wednesday nights, the armed forces at the top of the hill do live firing practice!
